Selling a damaged or junk Land Rover Defender

Nearly all the Defender complaints in NHTSA's file are about the new truck. Of 316 complaints, 299 are on the 2020 and later model years. The 17 on the 1993-2003 trucks are spread over nine model years.

New or old, a Defender that's electrically haywire, won't fire, or got bent in a wreck can go as it is. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

The original Defender (built 1983-2016)

Wikipedia says Land Rover built the Defender at Solihull from 1983 to 2016, with more than 2 million Series and Defender trucks made since 1948. Gas engines in the later years included the 3.9 Rover V8. The Td5 diesel was the last Land Rover engine built in-house at Solihull. Wikipedia also notes that early turbo-diesels had a poor reputation, with bottom-end failures and cracked pistons.

The US file is thin. NHTSA holds 17 complaints across 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2003, never more than 4 in a year. Engine and engine cooling is named on 1993 (2) and 2002 (3).

The recalls are small, too. Under 95V099, an inspection at the port of entry on 155 1995 trucks put the driveshafts back with the wrong size nuts, and dealers swapped the hardware. Under 96V108, owners of 1992-1995 trucks were mailed a battery hazard label that was never fitted at the factory.

The new Defender (model years 2020 on)

Wikipedia names the successor the Defender (L663). EPA lists it as the Defender 90, 110 and 130, with mild-hybrid versions. Owners have filed 299 complaints on it since 2020. A 2025 or 2026 Defender is only months old, so its count will still change a lot.

Three themes run through those complaints.

Electrical. It's the top system on the 2022 (21 of 75), the 2023 (38 of 82) and the 2024 (12 of 26). Related recalls: 25V016 for a center touchscreen that may go blank at startup on 2023-2024 trucks, and 21V424 for a powertrain control module that could switch off on 163 six-cylinder 2020-2021 trucks.

Lights. Exterior lighting leads the 2020 (17 of 55) and the 2021 (15 of 42). Recall 21V435 replaced smoked rear light assemblies on 2020-2022 Defender X trucks, where a bright light shining on the rear could set off a voltage spike.

Wipers and visibility. These rank second on the 2021 (12), 2022 (13) and 2023 (14), and lead the 2025 (7 of 13).

Engine oil gets two campaigns. Under 23V044, the cam carrier oil channel on 2020-2023 trucks may need replacing; under 24V450, dealers replace a 2023-2024 filter housing that may split and let oil out. Both also cover other Land Rover models.

Seats and belts collect four Defender-only campaigns: front seat tracks on 2021 Defender 90s (21V499), a third-row seatback latch on 2023 Defender 130s (23V137), a second-row belt stitching check on 2024 trucks (26V615), and a third-row belt anchorage bracket on 2026 trucks (26V163). Recall 26V389, for a driver air bag clockspring connector that may corrode on 2020-2026 trucks, is shared with the Discovery and Range Rover; its 250,857-vehicle count covers all three.

Defender complaints by model year

Data pulled October 10, 2026. NHTSA lists zero Defender complaints for 1998, 2000 and 2004-2019. Since a campaign may appear on several rows, totaling the recall figures won't give 20.

Fix it, or let it go?

For a 2020-on Defender, check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup first. Several of the electrical, lighting and oil problems above have free dealer fixes. Beyond that, weigh the shop's estimate against prices for a working Defender of that model year. Our electrical problems guide helps you read the symptoms.

A 1990s Defender is a different decision. These trucks are decades old, and parts and rust often decide it. See old project car and failed inspection or rust.

Selling a Defender whole

  1. Send the Defender's VIN, miles and fault, and say if it drives on its own.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe the spot. A barn, a trail-side lot or a city garage all work; mention lifted suspension or oversize tires so the right truck comes. Free pickup anywhere in the US.
  4. Leave the gear on. Sell the whole car as it sits, racks, snorkel and all, and mention anything already taken off.
  5. At pickup, sign over the title. For plates and insurance afterward, see after you sell.

Questions people ask

Which Defender years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2023 sits on top with 82 in NHTSA's October 10, 2026 file, ahead of the 2022 (75), 2020 (55) and 2021 (42). Defenders from 2024 on have barely started their service lives, so expect those numbers to climb.
What do owners complain about on the new Defender?
Electrical faults lead overall, with 92 complaints. Wipers and visibility (51) and exterior lighting (49) come next. Lighting tops the 2020 and 2021; the electrical system tops the 2022, 2023 and 2024.
Are there engine oil recalls on the Defender?
Two. 23V044 deals with the cam carrier's oil channel on 2020-2023 trucks; 24V450 swaps a filter housing prone to cracking on 2023-2024 trucks. Other Land Rovers share both campaigns. Run the VIN through nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm.
Will you buy a Defender that won't start?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Sell the whole car as it sits.
