Selling a worn-out or junk Land Rover Discovery
On the Land Rover Discovery, the brakes draw more complaints than any other system: 101 of the 786 owners have filed with NHTSA. Most come from the Series II years. The 2000 alone has 20 hydraulic brake complaints, and the 1999 sits under three separate recalls aimed at its anti-lock brakes.

A Discovery with tired brakes, an engine that runs hot or electrics that act up can be sold the way it is. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and the pickup is free anywhere in the US.
The Discovery, one generation at a time
These figures are owner complaints sitting in NHTSA's database on October 10, 2026. Production years come from Wikipedia and don't match US model years exactly.
Series I (built 1989-1998)
The 1994 to 1998 model years carry 213 complaints. On the 1995 (8 of 53) and the 1996 (13 of 75), the gas fuel system is named more than anything else. That lines up with recall 04V203: on 1994-1997 trucks, the plastic fuel tank can develop a stress crack, and dealers replace the tank.
Two more early recalls apply. Under 96V247, the right front door on 1995-1996 trucks could fail to latch and bounce back off its seals. Under 98V040, a chafed cruise control wire on 1994-1998 trucks could overheat the steering wheel coupler and fire the driver's air bag. That 54,488-vehicle campaign also covered the Range Rover.
Series II (built 1998-2004)
Wikipedia gives this Discovery a 1998-2004 production run and a 4.0-liter Rover V8. Its 1999 to 2004 model years hold 381 complaints, close to half the Discovery total.
Two systems dominate. The first is brakes: hydraulic brakes lead the 1999 (15 of 53), the 2000 (20 of 71) and the 2001 (9 of 44). Land Rover replaced the ABS pump relay on 1999 trucks (99V237), put a new ABS control unit in 1999-2001 trucks whose sensor could misread (02V022), and reinforced the ABS modulator valve covers on 1999-2004 trucks that fell short of two federal brake standards (04V005, a 100,174-vehicle campaign).
The second is heat. Engine and engine cooling leads the 2002 (19 of 51) and the 2003 (35 of 111). The 2003 also has 15 complaints filed under engine. Two other campaigns from these years: 02V028 for accelerator cables kinked during assembly on 1999-2002 trucks, and 00V377, a campaign shared with the Range Rover, about water fouling the automatic gearbox fluid in 1999-2001 Discoverys.
Discovery 3 and 4, sold as the LR3 and LR4 (2004-2016)
Wikipedia lists these as Discovery 3 / LR3 and Discovery 4 / LR4. Their complaints are filed under those names, so we cover them on the LR3 and LR4 pages.
Fifth generation, L462 (2017 on)
Wikipedia lists a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 and an 8-speed ZF automatic, built at Solihull for 2017-2018. The 2017 through 2026 model years have 185 complaints, and the electrical system leads almost every year: 14 of 55 on the 2017, 11 of 38 on the 2019, 9 of 11 on the 2021.
The recalls follow the same thread. Recall 20V694 replaced a loose battery ground stud on 2019-2020 trucks. Recall 23V393 shut off the keyless UniLatch on 2017-2020 rear doors that might not latch. Recall 26V458 drills extra drain holes in the tailgate trim on 2021-2025 trucks so water stops collecting at the rearview camera. Recall 26V248 updates software for the DC/DC converter on 2021-2024 trucks; its 170,169-vehicle count spans several Land Rover models. Trucks from 2022 onward simply haven't aged enough yet for complaints to stack up.
Discovery complaints and recalls, by model year
Snapshot date: October 10, 2026. The crash column tallies complaints in which the owner described a crash. Lots of Discovery recalls span more than one model year, which pushes the recall column's total well past 33.

Worth fixing?
- Open recalls come first. Type the VIN into NHTSA's search; any listed campaign is repaired by a dealer without charge.
- Brakes on a Series II. Get the fault read and quoted before deciding. Our bad brakes guide covers what to ask.
- Running hot. A 2002-2003 that overheats may need more than a hose. See head gasket or overheating.
- Compare the two numbers. The written repair quote on one side, the value of a running Discovery of the same year on the other. When the first catches up with the second, selling unrepaired wins. More in repairs cost more than it is worth.
How to sell your Discovery whole
- Jot down the 17-character VIN, the odometer miles and the symptoms.
- Request an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us the spot. A Discovery stuck in a backyard or a shop lot is fine. Say whether it rolls and has all four wheels, so the right truck shows up. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave it complete. Sell the whole car as it sits, roof rack and all. Anything missing changes the offer, so mention it.
- On the day, sign over the title and hand over any keys. Title still under a relative or a past owner? Car not in your name explains the fix. For plates and insurance afterward, see after you sell.
Other Land Rovers: Range Rover, Defender, Discovery Sport.
Questions people ask
- Which Discovery model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2003 tops the list at 111 in NHTSA's October 10, 2026 data. The 1996 (75), 2000 (71) and 2017 (55) follow, with the 1995 and 1999 tied at 53. Trucks built after 2020 have been driven for fewer seasons, so their short lists aren't the final word.
- Why does this page skip the 2005-2016 Discovery?
- Wikipedia lists the third and fourth generations as Discovery 3 / LR3 (2004-2009) and Discovery 4 / LR4 (2009-2016). Their complaints sit under the LR3 and LR4 names, so they have their own pages. The Discovery file holds only 2 complaints on the 2006 and 5 on the 2016.
- The rear doors on my 2017-2020 Discovery won't latch right. Is that a recall?
- It can be. Recall 23V393 covers certain 2017-2020 Discovery trucks whose keyless UniLatch entry may not latch the rear passenger doors properly. Dealers switch that keyless feature off at no cost; a VIN search on nhtsa.gov/recalls confirms coverage.
- Will you buy a Discovery that overheats or won't run?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Sell the whole car as it sits, and tell us if anything has been removed.
