Selling a damaged or junk Range Rover Sport

Steering is the system owners name most on the 2015, 2016 and 2017 Range Rover Sport: 14, 21 and 20 complaints to NHTSA. In August 2025, Land Rover recalled those years and the 2014 because the front suspension upper knuckle joint may crack.

Problems by generation

These Range Rover Sport counts come from complaints owners filed with NHTSA, as pulled on October 10, 2026. Production years are from Wikipedia and overlap model years at the edges.

First generation, L320 (built 2005-2013)

Wikipedia counts 413,841 built. Gas engines were a 4.2-liter supercharged V8, a 4.4 V8 and later a 5.0 V8. The 2006 through 2013 model years hold 221 complaints.

The 2010 and 2011 stand out for body complaints. Structure leads both, with 13 of 41 and 23 of 63. Recall 20V623 deals with one piece of that: on 2010-2011 trucks the upper cover of the rear spoiler can come off. Dealers check the spoiler and re-bond it.

The gas fuel system is the next most named on the 2010 through 2013. Recall 21V635 replaces a fuel outlet flange on the tank that may crack, on 2010-2013 Sports with the V6 or V8.

The first model year had its own pair of recalls. Under 06V131, the ignition key could come out after the engine was switched off, and dealers reprogrammed the transfer box control unit. Under 08V248, dealers fitted spacers so the steering column parts stopped rubbing the clockspring that feeds the driver air bag; that campaign also covered the 2005-2006 LR3.

Second generation, L494 (built 2013-2022)

Engines listed by Wikipedia include a 3.0 supercharged V6, a 3.0 Ingenium six with mild hybrid, and a 2.0 plug-in hybrid, all with an 8-speed ZF automatic. A facelift for 2018 brought new headlights and a new interior. The 2014 through 2022 model years carry 364 complaints, more than half of the total.

The 2016 tops every year with 77. Steering leads it, and the 2015 and 2017. Suspension is in the top three on the 2015 (8) and 2017 (9). That is the territory of recall 25V514, the knuckle campaign shared with the full-size Range Rover.

Other campaigns on this truck: three for the keyless door latches on 2014-2016 models (15V385, 19V390, 19V392), 17V679 for an instrument cluster that could go blank on the 2017, and 24V364 for water getting into the rear camera on 2018-2022 Sports. Engine complaints lead the 2018 (11 of 33).

Third generation, L461 (2022 on)

Wikipedia lists a 3.0 turbo six with mild hybrid, a 4.4 twin-turbo V8 from BMW, and a plug-in hybrid with a 38.2 kWh battery. The 2023 to 2026 model years have 54 complaints so far, and electrical issues lead the 2023 (13 of 23). With only a few years in service, these Sports are still early in the count.

Two campaigns update software for the DC/DC converter: 26V248 (2019-2024 Sport) and 26V599. Each reaches beyond the Sport to other Land Rovers, so neither vehicle total belongs to this model alone.

When fixing stops making sense

First stop: NHTSA's VIN search. A 2014-2017 with a knocking front end, or a 2010-2013 with a fuel tank complaint, may be covered by a free recall repair.

If no campaign applies, get a written estimate and hold it against listings for a running Sport from the same year. A big quote on an older truck is the usual reason people sell instead. Repairs cost more than it is worth lays out the math, electrical problems covers the electrical system, the second most common complaint area here after the engine, and broken suspension covers suspension work.

Getting it sold whole

  1. Collect the VIN, the miles shown on the cluster, and the fault in a sentence.
  2. Get an offer on the site, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe the access: a tight garage, a gravel drive, a dealer's back lot. Free pickup anywhere in the US.
  4. Keep it complete. Sell the whole car as it sits. Say if wheels, the battery or anything else is gone.
  5. Pickup day: the signed title and your driver's license are what's needed. Lost the title? Start with selling with no title. Plates and insurance: after you sell.

Questions people ask

Which Range Rover Sport years have the most NHTSA complaints?
In NHTSA's October 10, 2026 file, the 2016 has 77, ahead of the 2011 (63), 2017 (59), 2015 (55) and 2020 (46). Late-model Sports haven't been around long enough for their totals to mature.
Is there a recall for the front suspension on a 2014-2017 Sport?
Yes. Recall 25V514 lists some 2014-2017 Sports, plus the full-size Range Rover, for an upper knuckle joint up front that may crack. Dealers inspect and add a retaining bracket or replace the knuckle at no charge. Its 121,509 vehicles span both models. Enter your Range Rover Sport's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see every recall that applies to it.
Is there a fuel tank recall on the 2010-2013 Sport?
Recall 21V635 covers 2010-2013 Range Rover Sport and 2010-2016 LR4 trucks with the 3.0 V6 or 5.0 V8. A flange where fuel leaves the tank can crack; the dealer fits a new one free. Those 111,746 vehicles include LR4s.
Can I sell a Sport that won't start?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Sell the whole car as it sits.
