Selling a dead or junk Land Rover
Yes, a dead Land Rover can be sold without fixing it. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, Range Rovers included. The deal is short: sell the whole car as it sits, and a truck collects it for free anywhere in the US.

The Range Rover leads the complaint count
This table totals what Land Rover owners reported to NHTSA for each of the 11 models, in a pull dated October 10, 2026. A complaint is one owner's account of a problem; it is not a reliability score. Names sold for many years have simply had longer to pile up reports, while the newest model years have had little time to collect any.
| Model | Years in the EPA list | NHTSA complaints |
|---|---|---|
| Range Rover | 1987-2027 | 979 |
| Discovery | 1994-2026 | 786 |
| Range Rover Sport | 2006-2027 | 639 |
| Freelander | 2002-2005 | 454 |
| Range Rover Evoque | 2012-2026 | 392 |
| Defender | 1993-2027 | 316 |
| LR2 | 2008-2015 | 181 |
| LR3 | 2005-2009 | 175 |
| LR4 | 2010-2016 | 139 |
| Range Rover Velar | 2018-2026 | 115 |
| Discovery Sport | 2021 | 4 |
Three things stand out in the table:
- The Freelander's count is high for its short run. It sits in the EPA list for only four model years, 2002 to 2005, yet it has 454 complaints. That is more than the Evoque has collected over 15 model years.
- The three Range Rover names fill three of the top five rows. The Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and Evoque together account for 2,010 complaints.
- The low numbers at the bottom are partly about time. The Velar arrived for 2018, so it has had fewer years than the older names. The Discovery Sport shows up in the EPA list for 2021 only, and our count for it is 4.
From British Leyland to Jaguar Land Rover
Wikipedia's article on Land Rover dates the company to 1978, founded by British Leyland, with its headquarters in Solihull, in the West Midlands, from 1978 to 2012. British Leyland was the parent from 1978 to 1986, then Rover Group from 1986 to 1994.
The company itself is listed as defunct in 2012. It merged with Jaguar Cars in 2013, and its successor and current owner is Jaguar Land Rover. Jaguar is the related brand.
The Range Rover line grew into a family of its own: the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Velar and Range Rover Evoque. The Sport started life as a concept. Wikipedia says the Range Stormer, Land Rover's first concept vehicle, was shown at the 2004 North American International Auto Show and later became the Range Rover Sport.
How selling a whole Land Rover works
A Land Rover is a big, heavy vehicle, and that is fine. The truck comes to it. You don't need to drain anything, pull parts or get it running first.
- Have the model, year and mileage ready. On older ones, check the title for the exact name, since the LR2, LR3 and LR4 badges sit beside the Freelander and Discovery names.
- For a Land Rover, mention any locked or flat wheel, if the engine turns over, and if it can be pushed.
- Check whose name is printed on the title. If it is someone else's, read selling a car that is not in your name first.
- Tell us where it is parked: a garage, a gravel drive, a street or a shop lot.
If yours is stuck at a repair shop with a bill you don't want to pay, read selling a car stuck at a repair shop first. When it's gone, deal with the plates and the paperwork.

Every Land Rover model in the EPA list
The EPA has rated 11 Land Rover nameplates since the 1987 model year. Years are model years, from the first to the last one the list holds. Recent years keep getting added, which means a Land Rover whose range stops at 2026 or 2027 is likely still in showrooms.
| Model | Years in the EPA list |
|---|---|
| Range Rover | 1987-2027 |
| Defender | 1993-2027 |
| Discovery | 1994-2026 |
| Freelander | 2002-2005 |

| Range Rover Sport | 2006-2027 |
| LR2 | 2008-2015 |

| Range Rover Evoque | 2012-2026 |

Questions people ask
- Will you take a Range Rover that won't start?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and a Range Rover that will not crank is one of them. Sell the whole car as it sits; free pickup anywhere in the US means the truck comes to where it is parked.
- Which Land Rover has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The Range Rover. Our October 10, 2026 pull of NHTSA's owner reports found 979 for it. Remember how old it is. It joined the EPA list in 1987, ahead of every other Land Rover, so its owners have been reporting the longest.
- Is my LR3 the same as a Discovery?
- In the EPA list they are separate names. The LR3 appears for 2005-2009 and the LR4 for 2010-2016, while the Discovery name runs 1994-2026. We do not have an LR3 page yet, but we buy LR3s the same way as every other Land Rover.
