Selling a broken or junk Range Rover
Of the 97 complaints owners filed with NHTSA on the 2003 Range Rover, 71 are about the power train. No other Range Rover year matches either number. The pattern runs into the 2004 (24 of 51) and the 2005 (21 of 35), the early years of the third generation.

What owners reported, generation by generation
Each Range Rover number here is an owner complaint count pulled from NHTSA on October 10, 2026. Wikipedia gives production years; US model years don't line up exactly with them, so treat the edges as approximate.
The Classic (built 1969-1996)
Wikipedia says the first Range Rover rode on a separate frame, as every Range Rover did until 2001. NHTSA holds just 47 complaints for the 1987 through 1994 model years combined, with no 1991 complaints on file. They are spread thin across the fuel system, engine cooling, steering and suspension.
One recall from the end of this era matters on any 1995: campaign 98V040. A chafed cruise control wire could overheat the steering wheel's rotary coupler and set off the driver's air bag. Dealers added a fusible link. That campaign's 54,488 vehicles include Discoverys too, not only Range Rovers.
Second generation, P38A (built 1994-2001)
Wikipedia lists Rover V8s of 4.0 and 4.6 liters in this Range Rover. Range Rovers from those years paired every one of those engines with a manual gearbox of five speeds or a four-speed automatic. Engine and engine cooling lead the 1996 (10 of 35) and the 1997 (5 of 21).
Land Rover recalled 1995-1999 trucks under 00V328 for coolant leaking where it could get very hot, and changed several underhood hoses. Two more campaigns cover the last P38A years along with other Land Rovers: 00V377, because water could contaminate transmission fluid on the 1999-2001 models (59,445 vehicles in the campaign), and 00V142, for a left-side engine idler pulley on 1999-2000 trucks.
Third generation, L322 (built 2001-2012)
This is where the Range Rover became a unibody. Wikipedia lists a 5-speed automatic from 2001 to 2005 and a 6-speed from 2005 to 2012. The power train numbers above belong to this truck.
Later in the run, air bags take over. They lead the complaints on the 2007 (10 of 18), the 2008 (13 of 30) and the 2011 (7 of 19). Recall 16V374 replaced passenger frontal air bags on 2007-2011 Range Rovers with a sales or registration history in certain states; Hawaii, Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia and California are on that list. Recall 15V039 replaced one or both flexible front brake hoses on 2006-2012 trucks, a campaign of 74,648 vehicles.
Fourth generation, L405 (built 2012-2021)
Steering becomes the story. It is the top complaint on the 2015 (33 of 71), the 2016 (27 of 76) and the 2017 (15 of 62), with suspension second each time (16, 13 and 10). In August 2025, recall 25V514 covered the same years, since the front suspension upper knuckle joint on 2014-2017 trucks can crack.
Doors are the other theme. Three campaigns went after the keyless door latches on 2013-2016 trucks: 15V385, 19V392 and 19V390, the last for a stuck spring on 2016 models. Recall 24V023 covers water getting into the surround-view rear camera on 2018-2022 Range Rover and Range Rover Sport trucks.
Fifth generation, L460 (built 2022 on)
The newest trucks have 47 complaints across the 2022 to 2025 model years. Two to four years of ownership is not long for complaints to pile up. Brakes lead on the 2023 (8 of 21). The recall lists are long, though: 9 campaigns on the 2022, 11 on the 2023. One of them, 26V389, covers 2022-2026 Range Rovers whose driver air bag clockspring connector may corrode; dealers apply a protective gel. Its 250,857-vehicle count also takes in the Defender and Discovery.

Worth a big repair bill?
- Run the VIN first. NHTSA's recall lookup shows open campaigns. The knuckle, brake hose and air bag recalls above are free dealer repairs.
- Price the fix in writing. Then find asking prices for a running Range Rover with similar miles and the same model year. When the estimate creeps toward that figure, letting it go unrepaired usually wins. The repairs-cost-more guide walks through it.
- Clunking front end on a 2014-2017? Check recall 25V514 before paying for anything, and see broken suspension.
- Power train trouble on a 2003-2005? See bad transmission for what to ask a shop.
Selling the whole truck
- Before you reach out, grab the Range Rover's VIN, its mileage, and a few words on what failed.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where it is parked: driveway, garage, street or a shop lot. Note if a wheel won't turn, so the truck that comes is ready to load it. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Keep every part on it. Wheels, battery, converters: all of it stays. Flag anything that's already been taken.
- When the Range Rover is loaded, sign over the title, give the driver the keys and show ID. No title? Read selling with no title. For what happens to the plates and the insurance policy, see after you sell.

Questions people ask
- Which Range Rover model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2003 leads with 97 in NHTSA's file, counted October 10, 2026. Behind it sit the 2016 (76), 2015 (71), 2017 (62) and 2006 (53). A 2024 or 2025 has spent only a year or two on the road, so its small tally is still growing.
- Is my 2014-2017 Range Rover in the front knuckle recall?
- Possibly. Recall 25V514, reported August 8, 2025, reaches some 2014-2017 Range Rovers and Range Rover Sports. On these Range Rovers the front suspension upper knuckle joint can crack, letting the suspension arm work loose. Dealers inspect the knuckles and fit a retaining bracket or a new knuckle free of charge. Its 121,509 vehicles include the Sport. The VIN search at nhtsa.gov/recalls will tell you whether yours is on the list.
- Will you buy a Range Rover that won't start or won't move?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Mention if it can be pushed, if any wheel is locked, and the spot it occupies.
- Should I pull the wheels or the battery before selling?
- No. Sell the whole car as it sits. Anything already pulled off should be listed up front, since missing parts move the number.
