Selling a dead or worn-out Land Rover LR2
One model year owns nearly half of the Land Rover LR2's NHTSA complaint file. Owners filed 181 complaints on the 2008-2015 LR2 as of October 10, 2026, and 85 of them are on the 2008, the first year in the EPA data.

LR2 complaints and recalls by model year
LR2 owner complaints, counted from the NHTSA file on October 10, 2026. These are reports, not a reliability score. The 2015 LR2 has seven fewer years on the road than the 2008, so its total had less room to build. A single complaint may list several components. Each LR2 recall is listed under all the years it names, which pushes the recall column's total above four.
| Model year | Complaints | Component named most (count) | Recall campaigns |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2008 | 85 | Power train (34) | 1 |
| 2009 | 30 | Power train (19) | 0 |
| 2010 | 21 | Power train (9) | 2 |
| 2011 | 13 | Power train (5) | 2 |
| 2012 | 6 | Power train, suspension, unknown (1 each) | 2 |
| 2013 | 12 | Air bags (4) | 1 |
| 2014 | 8 | Gasoline fuel system (3) | 1 |
| 2015 | 6 | Air bags, power train, suspension (1 each) | 1 |
Across all eight years, the power train leads with 71 complaints, then the electrical system with 21, the engine with 14 and air bags with 10. The file also holds 3 crash reports, 2 fire reports, 3 injury reports and 6 tow reports. No deaths are recorded.
Where the complaints and recalls fall
We have no generation history for the LR2 on file, so these groupings follow the NHTSA numbers instead.
2008: the launch year carries the file
The 2008 has 85 complaints: 34 name the power train, 11 the electrical system and 8 the engine. Both fire reports in the LR2 file are on this year, along with one crash report.
Its one recall is about the roof. Under 08V055, Land Rover recalled 12,353 model-year 2008 LR2s built with a sunroof, because the guide rail on either side could break when the sunroof was opened or closed. Dealers fitted retention inserts to both glass-panel guide rails, starting February 29, 2008.
2009-2012: the power train stays on top
These four years hold 70 complaints, and the power train is named most on each of them (tied on the 2012). On the 2009 it is 19 of 30. The 2011 has one crash report and two injury reports.
Two recalls sit inside this stretch:
- 10V581, 2010-2011 LR2s built from November 12, 2009 through August 23, 2010. The shorting bar in the driver's air bag clock spring could come loose. Dealers fit a spacer in the clock spring harness connector. The campaign covers 2,956 vehicles.
- 12V563, 2012 LR2s and Range Rover Evoques built on June 11, 2012, whose rear brake caliper bolts may not have been tightened enough. Dealers inspect and tighten them. The 70 vehicles in that count include the Evoques.
2013-2015: air bags and fuel show up
The last three years hold 26 complaints. Air bags lead on the 2013 (4 of 12), and the gasoline fuel system leads on the 2014 (3 of 8), which also has one crash report.
Recall 14V395 reaches across most of the LR2's run, 2010 through 2015. A part inside the Occupant Classification System control unit is the issue, and dealers update the Restraint Control Module software for free, starting August 30, 2014. The campaign total of 40,551 vehicles also counts 2012-2013 Evoques, so it is not an LR2-only figure.
Fix the LR2 or sell it?
Weigh the shop's written estimate against what a healthy LR2 like yours sells for. If the estimate eats most of that price, letting it go unrepaired tends to make more sense. Before deciding:
- Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup. A 2010-2015 LR2 could still have 14V395 open, and the fix costs you nothing. Our open recall guide explains what to ask the dealer.
- Power train trouble? Get the diagnosis in writing. Our bad transmission guide explains the warning signs and whether the LR2 repair is worth it.
- Lights and modules acting up? See electrical problems before you replace parts one at a time.
- Quote higher than the car? That case has its own page: repairs cost more than it is worth.
Selling your LR2 whole
- Get your LR2 details ready: VIN, mileage, what's going wrong, and if it rolls.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where the LR2 sits. A driveway, back lot or shop yard, and whether it has all four wheels, helps the driver plan the load.
- Leave the LR2 whole. Please keep the wheels and catalytic converter on it. If something is already gone, list it.
- LR2 pickup: our driver checks your ID and takes the title. Your state decides what happens to the LR2's plates; after you sell explains it.
No title? Start with selling with no title. Looking at other Land Rovers from the same years? See the LR3, LR4, Freelander and Range Rover Evoque, or every Land Rover we cover.
Questions people ask
- Which LR2 model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2008. It accounts for 85 of the 181 LR2 complaints in NHTSA's file through October 10, 2026. Second is the 2009 at 30, third the 2010 at 21. A late LR2 was driven for fewer years before this tally, and that can hold its count down.
- Is my LR2 covered by the air bag sensor recall?
- It may be. Recall 14V395 covers certain 2010-2015 LR2s, plus 2012-2013 Range Rover Evoques. Dealers update the Restraint Control Module software free of charge. Type the LR2's VIN on nhtsa.gov/recalls to learn whether a recall covers it and is still unfixed.
- Will you buy an LR2 that won't start or won't move?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Say if your LR2 rolls, if all four wheels are still on, and where it sits.
- Should I pull parts off the LR2 before I sell it?
- No. You sell the whole car as it sits. If the LR2 is missing a wheel, the converter or anything else, say so first, because that changes our offer.
