Selling a broken or junk Range Rover Evoque

The 2020 Range Rover Evoque, the second model year of the second generation, shows up in 14 recall campaigns. No other Evoque year comes close. One of them, 20V683, carries NHTSA's park-outside warning.

If your Evoque has an engine fault, a gearbox problem or electrics that won't settle down, you can sell it without the repair. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and our free pickup anywhere in the US covers it.

First generation, L538 (built July 2011 to 2018)

Wikipedia says production started on July 4, 2011, at Halewood near Liverpool, on a platform loosely based on the Ford platform under the Freelander 2, with 90% of its parts redesigned. Gas engines were a 2.0 Ford EcoBoost turbo four and later a 2.0 Ingenium turbo four. Haldex all-wheel drive gave way to GKN systems with the 2014 update. The coupe ended early in the 2016 model year; the convertible ran 2017-2018.

These model years, 2012 through 2018, hold 304 of the 392 complaints owners filed with NHTSA. The engine is the most named system on five of them: 10 of 32 on the 2012, 8 of 46 on the 2013, 9 of 35 on the 2014, 18 of 64 on the 2015 and 10 of 51 on the 2017. Power train comes second on the 2014 (8) and the 2015 (12).

Recall 16V614 sits right on those years: dealers check the automatic transmission serial number on 2014-2015 Evoques and update the transmission if needed. Other first-generation campaigns:

  • 14V395: a part in the occupant classification module on 2012-2013 Evoques (and 2010-2015 LR2s) got a software fix.
  • 16V941: a front passenger air bag inflator replaced on some 2017 Evoques, in a 550-vehicle campaign that also covered 2016 Range Rover and Sport models.
  • 18V087: fuel rail end caps on 2018 Evoques with the 2.0 gas engine, in a campaign that also covered the Velar and Discovery Sport.

Second generation, L551 (model years 2019 on)

Wikipedia lists a 2.0 four with mild hybrid among the engines, a 9-speed ZF automatic, and a plug-in hybrid with a 15 kWh battery. Assembly runs at Halewood plus plants in China, India and Brazil.

The second generation has 88 complaints. The 2020 accounts for 53 of them, with electrical the top system at 16. Its recall list reads like a punch list:

  • 19V421: the washer fuse could fail and cut washer use.
  • 19V840: a metal plate in the headliner could come unglued in deep cold.
  • 20V517: the tire pressure monitor was set to the wrong pressure on some cars with 18-inch wheels.
  • 20V683: the 48-volt system on mild hybrids could overload. Park outside until fixed.
  • 21V168, 25V088, 25V089: lower knee air bag covers could come loose.
  • 22V080: the air bag warning light software was programmed wrong.
  • 25V454: the passenger air bag may tear when it deploys, on 2020-2025 Evoques.

Air bags are also the most named system on the 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025, though the counts are small: 3, 5, 4 and 1. Those Evoque years are new, so owners haven't had long to send in reports.

Evoque complaints and recalls, year by year

Pulled October 10, 2026. Campaigns overlap across model years, so adding the yearly recall numbers overshoots 26.

Repair or sell?

  1. Clear the recalls. On a 2020 especially, put the VIN into NHTSA's lookup. Recall work costs you nothing at the dealer.
  2. Get the real diagnosis. On the 2016 and 2018, NHTSA files the largest share of complaints under "unknown or other" (10 and 7), so the complaint list won't point you to a single system.
  3. Weigh the quote. Line the estimate up against listings for a running Evoque from the same year. When the gap is small, selling unrepaired saves the trouble. See electrical problems, bad transmission, or repairs cost more than it is worth.

Selling your Evoque as it sits

  1. Write out the VIN, odometer miles and which lights are on.
  2. Request an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Name the location: a parking garage level, an apartment lot, a driveway. Say whether it rolls. Free pickup anywhere in the US.
  4. Don't pull parts. Sell the whole car as it sits.
  5. At pickup, sign the title over and hand over the keys. Still paying on it? Read still owe on the loan. Plates and insurance: after you sell.

Other Land Rovers: Freelander, Range Rover, Range Rover Velar.

Questions people ask

Which Evoque model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
NHTSA's tally on October 10, 2026 puts the 2015 first at 64, followed by the 2020 (53), 2017 (51), 2016 (47) and 2013 (46). Evoques from 2021 on are young, and their counts reflect only a few years of use.
Why does a 2020 Evoque recall say to park outside?
Recall 20V683 covers certain 2020 Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque mild hybrids whose 48-volt electrical system may overload. NHTSA's record carries a park-outside warning. Dealers update the software free. The 3,048-vehicle count includes the Discovery Sport.
Was there a transmission recall on the 2014-2015 Evoque?
Yes, 16V614. Dealers check the automatic transmission serial number and update the transmission if needed. The 10,455-vehicle campaign also covers some 2015 Discovery Sport trucks.
Do you buy Evoques that don't run?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Sell the whole car as it sits.
