Selling an old or junk Land Rover Freelander

More than half of the complaints owners filed with NHTSA on the Land Rover Freelander name the engine and its cooling: 239 of 454. In the US the Freelander was sold only for the 2002 through 2005 model years, so every one of them is now at least two decades old.

An old Freelander that overheats, slips gears or won't start can go as it is. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

The cooling problem, in Wikipedia's words

Wikipedia lays out a chain: the thermostat and the coolant expansion tank failed under warranty, the engine overheated, and that damaged head gaskets and warped the block and cylinder heads. The first-generation engines it lists are a 1.8 Rover four, a 2.5 Rover KV6 V6 and a 2.0 diesel.

The NHTSA file matches. Engine and engine cooling leads the list for each US model year:

  • 2002: 103 of 226
  • 2003: 78 of 140
  • 2004: 49 of 69
  • 2005: 8 of 16

None of the six campaigns on file touches the engine or the cooling system.

The transmission

Wikipedia also reports trouble with the automatic, most often a shift solenoid failing in the valve body. It says the solenoid tended to fail again, and that mechanics often misread it as a failed transmission. On the 2002, power train is the second most named system, with 53 complaints. Owners filed a class action, Wikipedia notes, alleging Land Rover knowingly sold a defective product and did not honor the warranty on repairs.

Why it left after 2005

When MG Rover Group went into administration, its Powertrain division could no longer make the KV6. Wikipedia says that is why Land Rover ended the Freelander in the US and Canada on August 31, 2005. The three-door was later followed by the Range Rover Evoque in 2011, and the five-door by the Discovery Sport in 2015. Company statements say a new Freelander brand is due in late 2026.

Complaints and recalls by year

Taken from NHTSA on October 10, 2026. Three of the 454 sit under a 2001 model year, a year EPA never lists for the Freelander. Some Freelander campaigns name more than one year, so the yearly recall counts repeat and don't sum to 6.

The six campaigns, with whole-campaign vehicle counts:

  • 04V347 (2002-2004, 31,049): A-pillar trim replaced to meet the federal head-impact standard.
  • 07V041 (2002-2005, 33,247): brake lights could stay on with the pedal up; dealers adjusted or replaced the switches.
  • 05V300 (2002-2005, 1,941): on some five-door trucks the inside handle could open the door with the child lock on.
  • 04V207 (2003, 3,194): the left rear child lock could come undone.
  • 04V489 (2003, 4): a wrong weld nut could let the subframe crack.
  • 04V510 (2005, 4): passenger air bag modules replaced.

Is it worth fixing now?

On a Freelander this old, the question is usually whether one more cooling repair is worth it. Check open recalls at NHTSA's lookup first, though none of the six covers the engine. Then hold the shop's written quote up against local ads for a 2002-2005 Freelander that runs. Our head gasket guide explains what overheating damage tends to involve, and bad transmission covers a gearbox that won't shift right. Wikipedia's note about misdiagnosed solenoids is a reason to get a second look before you condemn the transmission.

Selling it whole

  1. Note down the VIN and miles, plus the symptoms: steam, a warning light, slipping.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where it is. A Freelander parked for years behind a garage is fine. A Freelander with flat tires or stuck brakes is still fine; just say so. Free pickup anywhere in the US.
  4. Leave it whole. Sell the whole car as it sits. Tell us if parts are missing.
  5. Paperwork: sign over the title at pickup. Title lost or never transferred? See selling with no title. If it has sat a long time, car sitting for years helps.

More Land Rovers: Discovery, Range Rover Evoque, LR2.

Questions people ask

Why do so many Freelanders overheat?
Wikipedia says the thermostat and the coolant expansion tank failed under warranty on the first-generation Freelander, which could overheat the engine, damage the head gaskets and warp the block and cylinder heads. Engine and engine cooling is the system named in 239 of the 454 complaints owners filed with NHTSA.
Which Freelander year has the most complaints?
The 2002 has 226 in NHTSA's count of October 10, 2026; the 2003 follows with 140, then 69 for the 2004 and 16 for the 2005. As the final US year, the 2005 is also the youngest Freelander, with the shortest stretch of driving behind it.
Why did Land Rover stop selling the Freelander in the US?
According to Wikipedia, MG Rover Group went into administration and the KV6 engine could no longer be built, so Land Rover ended the model in the US and Canada on August 31, 2005.
Will you buy a Freelander with a blown head gasket?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Sell the whole car as it sits.
