Selling a Land Rover LR4 that's done

Fuel runs through the LR4's NHTSA file. Of the 139 complaints owners filed on the 2010-2016 LR4 as of October 10, 2026, the two components named most are both fuel: "fuel/propulsion system" with 28 and "fuel system, gasoline" with 25. The largest recall on the model points the same way.

Your LR4 might smell of fuel, refuse to run, or cost more to fix than to replace. You can sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

One generation, two stretches of complaints

Wikipedia files the LR4 inside the Land Rover Discovery series as "Discovery 4 / LR4 (2009–2016)". It lists Gerry McGovern as designer and the 3.0 L AJ126 V6-S petrol engine. It came after the Discovery 3 / LR3 (2004–2009), and the series has been in its fifth generation since 2017. The EPA data covers the 2010-2016 model years and lists it under two classes: sport utility vehicle and standard sport utility vehicle.

Within that single generation the complaints split cleanly in two.

2010-2013: fuel leads every year

These four years hold 81 complaints. Fuel/propulsion is named most on the 2010 (6 of 16), the 2011 (6 of 23) and the 2012 (7 of 25, tied with gasoline fuel system). On the 2013, gasoline fuel system leads with 4 of 17. Seven of the 8 crash reports and 4 of the 11 fire reports are on these years.

The recalls that touch this stretch:

  • 21V635, the fuel outlet flange. Certain 2010-2016 LR4s and 2010-2013 Range Rover Sports with the 3.0L V6 or 5.0L V8. The flange on the fuel tank may crack, and dealers replace it free. Interim owner letters went out October 7, 2021. The 111,746 vehicles in the campaign include the Range Rover Sports.
  • 15V386, the panoramic roof. 2012-2013 LR4s built August 15 to September 18, 2012 got the wrong primer on the roof panel. Dealers apply the correct primer. 492 vehicles.
  • 14V618, tire pressure monitoring. 2013-2014 LR4s built September 16, 2013 to June 30, 2014 get a Body Control Module software update. The 28,037 count also takes in 2014 Range Rovers and Range Rover Sports.

2014-2016: the engine takes over

These three years hold 58 complaints, and the engine is named most on each: 5 of 12 on the 2014, 3 of 13 on the 2015, 8 of 33 on the 2016. The 2016 stands out with the most complaints of any LR4 year, 6 fire reports and 3 injury reports. Its next most-named components are the electrical system (5) and service brakes (4).

The 2015 has four recalls on file, more than any other LR4 year:

  • 15V069: one 2015 LR4 and one 2015 Range Rover Sport. Dealers replace the engine. Two vehicles in total.
  • 15V092: 2015 Range Rover, Range Rover Sport and LR4 built January 6 to 23, 2015. Dealers replace the wheel nuts. 28 vehicles across those models.
  • 15V214: 2015 LR4s built August 19, 2014 to February 9, 2015, with an anti-lock brake software error that affects Dynamic Stability Control. Dealers update the ABS software. 2,687 vehicles.
  • 21V635, the fuel flange campaign above, also reaches the 2015.

The 2016 adds 16V444: 32 LR4s built May 3 to 10, 2016, whose driver frontal air bags get replaced.

Fix the LR4 or sell it?

  1. Smell fuel? Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup before anything else. If 21V635 is open, the flange replacement is free at a dealer. See open recall for how this affects a sale.
  2. Engine trouble on a 2014-2016? Ask for the diagnosis and quote in writing, then check it against what sellers ask for sound LR4s with your year and mileage. The blown engine guide helps you weigh it.
  3. Already burned? Fire damage covers selling a car after a fire.
  4. Quote above the value? Read repairs cost more than it is worth.

LR4 complaints and recalls, year by year

NHTSA had received the LR4 complaints below by October 10, 2026. These are LR4 owners telling their own stories, not a final verdict on the truck. A 2010 has been around six years longer than a 2016 to pile up reports. Some complaints list two or more components. Each LR4 recall appears once for each model year it reaches.

How to sell an LR4 whole

  1. Make a note of your LR4's VIN, mileage, what it's doing, and if it can be pushed.
  2. Get an offer online or by calling (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where it is parked and how a truck gets to it: driveway, garage, side street, or a shop that has it now.
  4. Leave it complete. Wheels, seats and the catalytic converter stay on. Anything pulled off already belongs on the list you send us.
  5. On LR4 loading day, give our driver the title and show ID. Your state sets the plate rule; see after you sell.

Questions people ask

What is the LR4 fuel flange recall?
Recall 21V635 covers certain 2010-2016 LR4s and 2010-2013 Range Rover Sports with the 3.0-liter V6 or 5.0-liter V8. The fuel outlet flange on the fuel tank may crack, and dealers replace it free of charge. The 111,746 vehicles in the campaign include the Range Rover Sports, so that is not an LR4-only count.
Which LR4 year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2016 leads with 33 of the 139 on file through October 10, 2026, and 6 of the 11 fire reports sit on that year. Then come the 2012 (25) and the 2011 (23). Bear in mind that the youngest LR4s have spent the fewest years in owners' hands.
Will you buy an LR4 with a dead engine?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Let us know it won't run, if the wheels still turn, and the address where it waits.
Do I need to fix the recall before I sell?
No. You can sell the whole car as it sits. Telling the buyer about an open recall up front keeps the deal clean.
