Selling a broken or junk Maserati Ghibli

Of the 80 complaints Ghibli owners have sent to NHTSA about the M157 car, 72 sit on just four model years, 2014 through 2017. After that the count falls to one, two and five a year, and nothing is on file for 2021 to 2024. An empty row for the 2023 Ghibli does not prove it is trouble free, since it is much younger than a 2015.

One generation, two very different halves

Every Ghibli in EPA's data is the M157, built from 2013 to 2023, according to Wikipedia. Under the hood sat either the F160, a twin-turbo 3.0 V6, or the F154, a twin-turbo 3.8 V8, always paired with ZF's 8-speed automatic and driving the rear or all four wheels. It shares its base with the sixth-generation Quattroporte. The red car in the photo is a 1967 AM115, the Ghibli built from 1967 to 1973.

2014-2017: where the complaints and recalls pile up

The electrical system is the component owners name most across all Ghibli complaints (14), then the power train (10) and vehicle speed control (9). The 2014 and 2015 lead with speed control and electrical. The 2017 splits evenly, five electrical and five power train.

The recalls on these years touch several of the same systems:

  • Fuel lines. 14V654 and 18V831 (both 2014-2015) replace fuel delivery lines that could leak.
  • Floor mat. 16V122 (2014-2016) replaces the driver-side mat and possibly the accelerator pedal cover.
  • Rear suspension. 16V264 (2014-2016) checks the bolts holding the rear tie-rod to the hub carrier.
  • Gear display. 16V424 (2014) is a software update for cars with the eight-speed automatic.
  • Seat wiring. 17V046 (2014-2017) replaces seat harnesses that can rub when the seats are adjusted.
  • Engine software. 18V173 (2017) re-flashes the engine control module for a problem at slow speeds, such as stop-and-go traffic.

Most of these campaigns also covered the Quattroporte, and some the Levante. So 16V122's 28,235 vehicles and 17V046's 39,381 are totals across models, not Ghibli counts.

2018-2024: few complaints, steady recalls

Eight complaints in total, five of them on the 2020, two of those naming the engine. More Ghibli recalls followed: a replacement fuel delivery line kit on the 2018 (17V834), front subframe welds on the 2018 (18V347), fuel line sensor housings that could crack and leak on 2021-2022 cars (21V872 and 24V269), seat belt retractors on the 2021 (21V703), and new radio software for 2021-2024 (25V098, a 27,354-vehicle campaign spanning several Maserati models).

Complaints and recalls by model year

Complaint counts reflect NHTSA's file on October 10, 2026. Any campaign spanning more than one model year shows up in every year it covers.

Worth repairing, or time to let it go?

Run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup first. The listed remedy for each Ghibli campaign is free at a Maserati dealer, so an open fuel line or engine software recall is something to get done, not a reason to sell.

For a 2014-2017 with an electrical or power train problem no recall covers, get a written diagnosis and quote. Then look up what the same Ghibli sells for running. If the quote comes near that number, repairs cost more than it is worth walks through the decision, and electrical problems covers faults that return after a fix.

Selling your Ghibli whole

  1. Find the VIN and which Ghibli it is. EPA's list runs from the base V6 through the S, SQ4, GT, Modena and Trofeo.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Let us know where your Ghibli sits and whether it rolls in neutral.
  4. Keep the twin-turbo engine, wheels and converters on the car. If a previous owner took something, list it.
  5. Have your ID and the Ghibli's title ready for the driver. Plate steps are on after you sell.

Questions people ask

Which Ghibli model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2015 leads with 25 (count taken October 10, 2026), ahead of the 2017 at 21 and the 2014 at 19. Part of why post-2017 Ghiblis show so few reports is simply that they are younger cars.
Does a recall's vehicle count mean that many Ghiblis were affected?
No. Most Ghibli recalls also covered the Quattroporte, and some the Levante or other Maserati models. The count is for the whole campaign. 17V046, the seat wiring recall, counted 39,381 vehicles across three models.
Will you buy a Ghibli that won't start or move?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Mention whether the Ghibli still shifts out of park.
