Selling a dead or damaged Maserati Levante
The first model year accounts for most of what owners have told NHTSA about the Levante: 18 of 31 complaints are on the 2017, and that year also got two Levante-only recalls for engine software that could drop the transmission into neutral or shut the engine down at walking pace.

Owner complaints and recalls, by model year group
Wikipedia gives the Levante one generation, built at Mirafiori in Turin from March 2016 to March 2024. On the gas side: a twin-turbo F160 V6 of 3.0 liters or a twin-turbo F154 V8 of 3.8 liters, each bolted to ZF's 8HP eight-speed. 2017: the launch year
Eight of the 2017's complaints name the engine and three the electrical system. Two recalls went after low-speed engine behavior:
- 16V936 (1,514 vehicles): engine software could shift the transmission to neutral, or shut the engine down, at about two miles an hour.
- 17V161 (3,291 vehicles): a similar engine software problem in stop-and-go traffic.
Both are dealer software updates, listed as free. The 2017 also shares 16V839, a telematics software update for temperatures below freezing, and 17V046, seat wiring harnesses that can rub, with the Ghibli and Quattroporte. 17V046 counted 39,381 vehicles across all three models.
2018-2020: the electrical complaints
Eleven complaints across three years, and electrical is the component named most on the 2019 (4 of 5) and the 2020 (2 of 2). One 2018 complaint reports a fire. Recalls: front subframe welds that may be incomplete on 2018 cars (18V347, 62 vehicles across three models), and headlights aimed too high on 2019 cars with full LED adaptive headlights (19V521, Levante only).
2021-2024: little on file so far
Two complaints, one naming the fuel system on a 2022 and one electrical on a 2023. Levantes this young have had only a few seasons for owners to report anything. The recalls: seat belt retractors on the 2021 (21V703), a fuel line sensor whose housing may crack and leak on 2021-2022 Levantes (21V872), and a radio software update for 2021-2024 (25V098, a 27,354-vehicle campaign covering many Maserati models).
Fix it or sell it?
- Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. On a 2017 that stalls or slips into neutral at low speed, make sure both engine software recalls were done before you pay for a diagnosis.
- Get the problem named in writing. With electrical the top complaint on later years, a vague quote is hard to judge.
- Check the quote against what a running Levante of that year and version sells for. When the bill nearly matches the repaired car's value, fixing it rarely pays. Open recall explains selling with recall work still pending.

How to sell the Levante whole
- Have ready: the VIN, mileage, version (S, GTS, Trofeo, Modena and others), and what's wrong.

- Explain its condition: does it crank, will it leave park, is it in a garage or on the street? A Levante locked in park gets loaded differently.
- Hand it over intact. If the wheels or converters are already off, list that when you ask.

- Eighteen of the 31 (counted October 10, 2026) are 2017s, and eight of those name the engine. It is also the oldest Levante, so owners have had the most years to file, and it carries four recall campaigns, two of them engine software updates.
- Which Levante recalls were for the Levante alone?
- Three: 16V936 and 17V161, engine software updates on the 2017, and 19V521, headlight aim on 2019 cars with full LED adaptive headlights. The other six also covered other Maserati models, so their vehicle counts are whole-campaign totals.
