Selling a Mercedes-Benz 190 from 1984 to 1993
All three NHTSA recalls on the Mercedes-Benz 190 are for 1984-1988 cars: wheels that could crack, a fuse that could take out the brake lights, and a parking brake grip. The 1989-1993 cars have none, yet they hold 50 of the 94 complaints.

The photo above shows an early-1960s 190 D, per its Commons caption. This page covers the 190 models in EPA data, model years 1984 to 1993, from the 190D diesels to the 190E 2.3-16.
The three recalls
Each vehicle total covers its full campaign, and other Mercedes-Benz models may be in it.
- 85V072 (1984): wheels could develop hairline cracks around the ventilation holes, and a rim could eventually break. The fix was new rims as necessary. 6,384 vehicles.
- 87V104 (1984-1986): if fuse no. 9 blew, the rear brake lights would stop working. The fix split the circuit across two fuses so that a blown fuse disables cruise control instead. 65,196 vehicles.
- 91V137 (1984-1988): the parking brake grip could distort and pinch the release knob, which could leave the brake partly set. The grip was replaced with a new type. 96,541 vehicles.
What owners reported
Air bags are the component named most, 14 complaints, and they top the list on the 1986, 1989, 1990 and 1993. Visibility follows with 13, engine and engine cooling with 12, and the electrical system with 11. Vehicle speed control appears 10 times, 3 each on the 1985, 1987 and 1989.
The 1991 has the most complaints, 16, with the electrical system named in 4 and fires reported in 4. Across all years, the complaints report 16 crashes and 24 injuries.
190 counts from NHTSA records on October 10, 2026. The last 190 model years haven't been driven as long. A recall is listed in each 190 year it covers.

Keep it or let it go?
A 190 is old enough that the question is usually about parts and patience, not one repair. If you started a restoration and stalled, selling an old project car walks through the choice. If it has simply worn out, see old or high mileage. For a car that hasn't moved in years, sitting for years covers what to expect.
Selling your 190 whole
- Find the VIN and title. No title? Start with selling with no title.
- Ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where the 190 is parked and whether it rolls, so our driver can get it on the truck.
- Leave it complete. Don't pull the engine or the trim first; mention anything that's already gone.

Questions people ask
- Which 190 model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 1991 190 leads with 16 complaints on October 10, 2026. The 1987 has 14 and the 1985 has 13. A 190 from the end of the run has had fewer years for owners to file reports.
- Could my 190 still have an open recall?
- Only a 1984-1988 car is covered by any of the three. Put the 190's VIN into nhtsa.gov/recalls and see whether the wheel, fuse or parking brake grip recall was fixed.
- Will you take a 190 that has sat for years?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Sell the whole car as it sits, flat tires and all, and tell us where it's parked.
