Selling an inoperable car in Enid

An inoperable car in Enid has 48 hours outdoors before it breaks the city code. Section 4-6-2 bars keeping one "in the open upon private property" beyond that, unless it is fully inside a building. Even a repair shop gets only 90 days. If your car has stopped running, we buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

The rule for private property

Section 4-6-2 reads: "No person shall deposit, store, keep or permit to be deposited, stored or kept in the open upon private property an inoperable motor vehicle for a period exceeding 48 hours, unless such vehicle is completely enclosed within a building or stored in connection with a business lawfully established to store or work on such vehicles."

The business exception has its own limit. A shop "lawfully established to work on vehicles" may not keep them outside "in excess of 90 days unless stored within a building or on a lawfully operated salvage yard." So a car abandoned at a mechanic's lot is on a clock as well, just a longer one. See car stuck at a repair shop if that is your situation.

Section 4-6-3 calls "one or more inoperable vehicles" a nuisance. The car's owner is on the hook, and so is the landowner, the tenant or anybody else who controls the property. Renters and landlords can both get the notice.

The general nuisance definition in Section 4-4-1 adds property with "an abandoned motor vehicle situated on the premises," and property with "inoperative or unregistered motor vehicles, including recreational vehicles, which have no tires, flat tires or are in disassembled status."

Notice, ten days, and the right to a hearing

Under Section 4-6-4, the city gives notice "in person or by registered mail" to the car's owner, the landowner, or both.

From there, Section 4-6-3 gives ten days to remove the car or "have the vehicle housed in a building where it will not be visible from the street or from other private property."

You may also contest it. Section 4-6-4 gives the owner "the right to a hearing before the Planning Administrator, or his designee." To use it, file "a written request for a hearing with the City Clerk within ten days of receiving the notice."

Either way, the ten-day window is the same length.

Streets and the airport

Enid's impound chapter has its own clocks for public places. Section 6-12-4 lets police impound "any derelict vehicle" left on a city street "for a period of 72 hours," and one left on city airport property for 48 hours, notifying the owner "if the owner of the vehicle may be ascertained by reasonable diligence."

For other parking violations, the same section requires notice. If the owner is present, they get one hour's advance notice and a chance to move the car. If not, the notice is left on the car "at least 12 hours in advance of impoundment." During street construction, signs go up at least 48 hours ahead saying all vehicles must be removed.

Getting a towed car out under Section 6-12-11 takes the order of release, shown at the impound lot, plus payment of "all impoundment costs and accrued storage charges due."

Titles in Garfield County

We have not checked a Garfield County title office for this page. For Enid owners, Service Oklahoma and its licensed tag agencies, called operators, handle titles and tags.

What the seller does:

  1. Fill in the title's assignment section, with warranty of title and any liens.
  2. Swear to it before a notary.
  3. Deliver the signed title when the buyer takes the car.

Since July 1, 2025, Service Oklahoma puts out its titles in electronic form. Paper titles stay good until the next sale. For an electronic title, get Form 718 from the Service Oklahoma site and print it. Complete it, have a notary sign off, and hand it to the buyer instead of a title. For a car from model year 2011 or newer, there is also an odometer disclosure, usually on the title.

The plate and the two-day window

Your plate stays yours. State law keeps the plate and registration in the owner's name, and it is removed when the car is sold. A later Enid purchase in the same registration class can carry it for whatever time is left on the registration.

Inside two business days, one party to the sale pre-registers it, in person or online, with Service Oklahoma or a licensed operator. Paper titles printed from January 2006 on include a detachable transfer-notice stub, handled the same way as Form 773.

No title, or a car past saving

If the car is older than 10 model years and dead, or bound for a scrap metal dealer, a certificate of ownership can replace a missing title. The Enid seller has 30 days to mail a copy and the $4 fee to Service Oklahoma or to a licensed operator. There is a second option. If an Enid car is only good for parts and metal, the owner can ask to cancel its title at no cost. See junk car with no title.

Getting an offer

Send the form or call (877) 421-6008 and share a few things: model year, brand, rough miles, if it can roll, and how the title looks. We can pick up from a backyard, a lot off Broadway, or a shop where the 90 days are nearly gone. Nearby, we have pages for Stillwater and Ponca City. Statewide rules are on the Oklahoma page.

Questions people ask

How long can an inoperable car sit in my Enid yard?
Section 4-6-2 sets 48 hours out in the open. The exceptions are a car fully closed inside a building or one held by a business lawfully set up to store or repair vehicles.
Enid sent me a violation notice. What is my deadline?
Under Section 4-6-3 you have ten days from the notice to move the car off the lot or put it in a building where the street and the lots nearby can't see it. You can also ask for a hearing before the Planning Administrator by filing a written request with the City Clerk within ten days of receiving the notice.
My car sits at a repair shop in Enid. Is that allowed?
A repair shop that is lawfully set up can hold an inoperable car outdoors for up to 90 days. Past that, it has to be indoors or at a salvage yard run lawfully.
Will Enid police tow a dead car off the street?
Yes. Under Section 6-12-4, police may impound a derelict vehicle that has sat 72 hours on an Enid street, or 48 hours on city airport land, and notify the owner if the owner can be found.
