Selling a dead Oldsmobile Aurora

Fuel is the Aurora's story in NHTSA's complaint file. Owners filed 785 complaints on the Aurora, counted as of October 10, 2026. The fuel system is named in 253 of them, and 246 of those are on the 1995 through 1997 cars.

A tired Aurora with a fuel smell, a dead V8 or a burned engine bay can go without repairs. You can sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

First generation, 1995-1999: the V8 and its fuel rail

Wikipedia lists the first Aurora on GM's G-body, related to the Buick Riviera, built in Orion Township, Michigan. It had a 4.0-liter L47 V8 and a 4-speed 4T80-E automatic. The body was stiff enough that, in crush tests, it broke GM's testing machine; a truck-frame crusher had to finish the job.

This generation holds 628 of the 785 complaints. The 1995 alone has 321, and 160 of those name the fuel system. The 1996 and 1997 each have 43 fuel system complaints. Fire reports cluster there too: 1995 has 31, 1996 has 9 and 1997 has 17, so 57 of the Aurora's 66.

Recall 04V110000 is the campaign tied to those years. On 1995-1997 cars with the 4.0L V8, the fuel rail's nylon tubing can break down and split, and the 1995 also uses a unique fuel return line under the hood. Dealers inspect the car and fit a new stainless steel fuel rail, plus a revised return line where it applies. Its 483,477-vehicle total may take in other cars with that V8.

Other first-generation recalls:

  • 00V057000, 1995: the rear shoulder belts may not retract after a retainer separates from the retractor. Dealers add a retaining strap.
  • 95V204000, 1996: the MALL module (malfunction alarm, lighting and locking) might carry a damaged capacitor that silences the key reminder chime and the belt warning.
  • 99V081000 and 99V238000, 1999: small campaigns for cars that may have been built with incorrect front brake parts on one side, and loose brake booster nuts.

The engine and engine cooling leads the 1998 with 10 complaints. Production ended on June 25, 1999, and no 2000 models were built, although NHTSA's file holds 4 complaints under that year.

Second generation, 2001-2003: steering, then a short run

The second Aurora shared its basics with the Buick LeSabre and added a 3.5-liter V6 next to the 4.0 V8, and shifted through a 4T65-E four-speed. The Orion plant built 68,552 of them: 53,640 in 2001, 10,865 in 2002 and 4,047 in 2003. The last 500 left the line on March 28, 2003, all in Dark Cherry Metallic with chrome wheels and Final 500 badges.

The 2001 has 119 complaints, led by steering (25) and the engine (14). The 2002 and 2003 have 25 and 7. Small production runs and fewer years in service both hold those numbers down.

Recalls on this generation:

  • 00V114000, 2001: internal fluid leaks in the ABS hydraulic control unit. Dealers inspect the modulator and replace it if needed.
  • 02V222000, 2002-2003: on deployment, the driver-side inflator might split at a weld.
  • 03V238000, 2002-2003: on cars with the 4.0L V8, dealers replace the fuel tank pressure sensor. The campaign's 102,212 vehicles include Cadillac DeVille and Seville models and the Pontiac Bonneville SSEi.

Worth repairing?

  1. Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. On a 1995-1997, find out from a GM dealer if the stainless rail was ever installed. Our open recall guide covers selling with a campaign still open.
  2. Fuel smell or a past engine fire? Don't keep driving it. If there's already fire damage, see fire-damaged car.
  3. Get the estimate on paper and line it up against local asking prices for a running Aurora of that year. When the two numbers get close, selling the car unrepaired is usually the better call.

Sell the Aurora as it sits

  1. Collect the VIN, miles and what's wrong. Say whether it's the V6 or the V8, if you know.
  2. Request an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe the spot it's parked in, and say if it rolls and steers. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Keep it complete. Leave the wheels, the converters and the battery on, and mention anything already removed.
  5. Once the Aurora is on the truck, sign the title to us and show a photo ID. If the title is missing, see selling with no title. For plates and insurance, see after you sell.

Questions people ask

What is the Aurora fuel rail recall?
Recall 04V110000 covers 1995-1997 Auroras with the 4.0L V8. Nylon tubing in the rail can deteriorate until it cracks, and the 1995 also has a unique fuel return line under the hood. Dealers replace the fuel rail with a stainless steel one. The campaign covered 483,477 vehicles, and that count may include other models.
Why are there no 2000 Auroras?
Wikipedia says first-generation production ended on June 25, 1999, and no 2000 models were produced. The second generation started production on November 1, 1999, as a 2001 model. NHTSA's file still holds 4 complaints filed under a 2000 model year.
Which Aurora years have the fewest complaints?
The 2003 (7) and 2002 (25), counted as of October 10, 2026. Wikipedia says only 4,047 were built in 2003 and 10,865 in 2002, so fewer cars were on the road to collect complaints.
Will you buy an Aurora with a fuel leak or engine fire damage?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Describe the leak or fire and the car's location.
