Selling an old or dead Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser
The last Custom Cruiser is the one owners wrote to the government about most. The 1992 holds 17 of the 39 complaints in NHTSA's owner file for this wagon on October 10, 2026. Those 17 include 3 fires, 5 injuries and the model's only death. Oldsmobile ended the Custom Cruiser after that model year.

Two different wagons under one name
The EPA data on this site starts with the 1984 model year, which puts these cars in two generations, per Wikipedia.
1984-1990: the woodgrain B-body
This generation ran from 1977 to 1990 on GM's B-body, alongside Buick's Electra and LeSabre Estate wagons. After 1980 the 350 and 403 V8s gave way to the 307. Assembly moved from Kansas City (through 1984) to Detroit (1985-1987) and then Arlington, Texas (1988-1990).
Brakes dominate the complaints from these years. The 1986 has 10 complaints, and 9 name the hydraulic service brakes. Cruise control is the other thread. Recall 89V102000 covers 1984-1988 wagons: the cruise servo's bail holds a tiny nylon bushing that can work loose, which may rev the engine unexpectedly or let it keep firing after the ignition is switched off. That 1,755,897 number is the campaign-wide total; other GM models may be part of it. The 1987 also has recall 87V168000, for a transmission manual valve link that may have been formed wrong.
1991-1992: fuel injection, no woodgrain
The third generation moved to Willow Run in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and shared its body with the Buick Roadmaster Estate. It got a 5.0-liter (305) V8 rated at 170 hp, the first fuel-injected V8 in a rear-wheel-drive Oldsmobile, and a 4-speed 4L60 automatic. Two-tone paint replaced the woodgrain, and alloy wheels replaced wire covers.
Three recalls fall here. Secondary hood latches can corrode on 1991-1992 wagons (91V186000). Shoulder belt guide loop covers can crack on the 1991 (92V094000). On the 1992, corrosion can make the ABS modulator weep fluid out of the front brake circuit (97V217000). Sales of the 1992 fell more than 40 percent, and Oldsmobile shifted to the Bravada and Silhouette.
Complaints and recalls by model year
We took these Custom Cruiser counts from the NHTSA owner database on October 10, 2026. A multi-year recall is listed again under each year it touches.
| Model year | Complaints | Recall campaigns | Components named most |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1984-1985 | 0 each | 1 each | None filed |
| 1986 | 10 | 1 | Hydraulic service brakes (9) |
| 1987 | 2 | 2 | Speed control (2) |
| 1988 | 1 | 1 | Electrical (1) |
| 1989 | 2 | 0 | Electrical (1), speed control (1) |
| 1990 | 0 | 0 | None filed |
| 1991 | 6 | 2 | Speed control, air bags, seat belts (1 each) |
| 1992 | 17 | 2 | Seat belts (6), hydraulic brakes (4), electrical (3) |
| 1993 | 1 | 0 | Structure (1) |
One complaint is filed under a 1993 model year, though production ended after 1992.
Repair it or let it go?
Brakes are the pattern in this data. Start by running the VIN through NHTSA's recall site; a 1992 losing fluid up front may fall under the ABS modulator recall. Next, get the repair priced on paper and compare it with local asking prices for a running Custom Cruiser of that year. Our bad brakes guide covers the warning signs. If the wagon is a stalled restoration, see selling an old project car.
Selling the wagon whole
- Jot down: VIN, odometer miles, the known faults, and whether the wagon rolls and steers.
- Ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe the spot: driveway, garage, back field. Flat tires, or a steering wheel locked with no key, change which truck gets sent, so mention them.
- Leave it together. Sell the whole car as it sits, trim and roof rack included.
- Paperwork: our driver collects the Custom Cruiser's signed title and looks at your photo ID. State law decides the plates; after you sell explains it.
Questions people ask
- Which Custom Cruiser year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 1992, the final model year: 17 of the wagon's 39 complaints in NHTSA's October 10, 2026 file. Seat belts (6) and hydraulic brakes (4) come up most. The 1986 is next with 10, and 9 of those are about the brakes.
- What recalls cover a 1991 or 1992 Custom Cruiser?
- Three. Campaign 91V186000 covers secondary hood latches that can corrode on 1991-1992 wagons. Campaign 92V094000 covers shoulder belt guide loops on the 1991. Campaign 97V217000 covers a 1992 ABS modulator that corrosion can make weep fluid from the front brakes. Typing a Custom Cruiser's VIN into nhtsa.gov/recalls lists any recall that was never fixed.
- Will you take a Custom Cruiser wagon that hasn't moved in years?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Mention whether the tires still hold air and what surface the wagon is parked on; it helps the driver bring the right equipment.
- Should I pull the woodgrain trim or the roof rack before selling?
- No. You sell the whole car as it sits. Leave the trim, wheels and rack on. If anything is already missing, say so up front.
