Selling a Plymouth Horizon that's done

NHTSA lists seven recall campaigns for the 1984-1990 Plymouth Horizon and only 23 owner complaints. Three of those recalls involve fuel or oil leaking in the engine bay. The other four cover a stalling valve, battery vents, rear suspension bolts and a missing horn symbol.

Wikipedia says the Omni and Horizon were the best-selling Chrysler line from 1978 to 1980. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and you can sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

By model year

Horizon owners sent these reports to NHTSA; the count closes October 10, 2026. They do not rate how reliable a car is, and the 1989-1990 cars had the fewest years to draw them.

YearComplaintsRecall campaignsWhat the recalls cover
198421Fuel reservoir leak
198522Stalling from the EGR valve; fuel reservoir leak
198612Blocked battery vents; rear pivot bolts
198791Fuel pressure regulator leak
198831Horn symbol missing from the pad
198931Valve cover gasket oil leak
199031Valve cover gasket oil leak

Two complaints report a fire, one on the 1984 and one on the 1987. The 1987 also has the only reported crash.

Problems by where it was built

Wikipedia lists four engines: a 1.6-liter Simca four, a 1.7-liter Volkswagen four, a 2.2-liter K four and a turbocharged 2.2. Belvidere, Illinois built the Horizon until 1987. Production then shifted to the AMC plant in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and in 1989 to Jefferson Avenue Assembly in Detroit.

1984-1986: the Belvidere years

Five complaints. Four recalls:

  • 84V147000 (1984-1985): fuel can leak at the silver fuel reservoir can on the air cleaner and its hoses. 340,000 vehicles in the campaign. Not all of them may be Horizons.
  • 84V116000 (1985): an emissions valve can richen the mixture on deceleration, so the engine may stall while stopping, coasting or turning. Dealers remove the valve. 2,385 vehicles.
  • 86V053000 (1986): plastic flashing can block battery vents, and the case can rupture. 32,149 vehicles.
  • 91V056000 (1986): rear trailing arm pivot bolts can crack from stress corrosion. 55,000 vehicles.

1987-1990: Kenosha, then Detroit

Eighteen complaints, half of them on the 1987. That year's recall, 91V132000, is a fuel pressure regulator that leaks fuel into the engine bay, with 95,000 vehicles in the campaign. The 1988 recall, 89V091000, was a postcard to owners because the horn pads lacked the required horn symbol. Both the 1989 and 1990 Horizon fall under 89V237000, for a valve cover gasket that can shift and leak oil. That campaign covers 634,000 vehicles, other models included.

Fix it or let it go?

First, put the Horizon's VIN in NHTSA's recall lookup. If a 1987 smells of fuel under the hood, park it until someone checks the regulator. On a 1986, ask whether the rear suspension pivot bolt recall was done.

After that, put a written quote side by side with the price a running Horizon fetches. If the quote comes close, junk car removal explains the other route. A half-finished restoration fits old project car.

Questions people ask

Which Horizon year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 1987 holds 9 of the 23 reports at NHTSA (October 10, 2026). No other year tops 3, though the last Horizons had less road time to draw any.
Does every Horizon recall count only Horizons?
No. Vehicle counts are for the whole campaign, and each total may include other models. That goes for the 634,000 valve cover campaign too.
Can you pick up a Horizon with flat tires on a dirt lot?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us about the tires and the ground so the truck comes ready.
