Selling an old Saturn SL that's done
The SL was where Saturn started. The first one rolled off the line in Spring Hill, Tennessee, on July 30, 1990, Wikipedia says, and the last SLs were 2002 models. Owners have filed 2,218 complaints with NHTSA across those years, and 346 of them report a crash.

SL complaints and recalls by year
We counted these SL numbers in NHTSA's complaint data on October 10, 2026. Any recall that spans two SL years sits in both rows. Late SLs had fewer years on the road for owners to file than the 1991-1995 cars, though even a 2002 is now 24 years old.
| Year | Complaints | Crashes | Injured | Recalls | Named most |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1991 | 29 | 2 | 4 | 1 | Seat belts (12) |
| 1992 | 123 | 18 | 25 | 2 | Seat belts (24) |
| 1993 | 175 | 24 | 14 | 2 | Brakes and engine cooling (26 each) |

| 2001 | 111 | 14 | 10 | 2 | Electrical (24) |
| 2002 | 131 | 20 | 16 | 0 | Electrical (36) |
Over the SL's full run, 349 complaints name engine and engine cooling, 250 the power train and 249 the hydraulic brakes. Seven complaints report a death.
What owners reported, generation by generation
1991-1995: seats, belts and the first recalls
Wikipedia lists a 1.9-liter four, with the LL0 version running twin cams, and a choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. These five years hold 968 complaints.
Seats and seat belts stand out. Seat belts lead the 1991 and 1992, and on the 1994 they're named 43 times beside 46 for seats. The seat complaints line up with recall 99V045: on 1994-1995 cars, worn teeth in the recliner gears can let a front backrest slide partway back. Dealers replace the recliners.
Brakes are a steady third: 39 complaints on the 1994 and 46 on the 1995.
Other recalls from these years:
- 93V132 (1991-1993): generator wiring with no protection against a short in the generator. Dealers swap in a harness that opens like a fuse. The 352,833 count from NHTSA covers the full campaign and may include Saturns other than the SL.
- 94V170 (1995): a manual steering pinion shaft that was heat treated wrong and could fracture while driving.
- 94V217 (1995): a park lock cable adjusted so the car could shift out of Park with the key removed.
- 92V098 (1992) and 93V094 (1993): transaxle valve bodies machined wrong, and a battery cable terminal that could short against the starter solenoid.
1996-1999: the redesign, and engine complaints
The second-generation SL got a completely redesigned exterior and kept the 1.9-liter engines. Its four years hold 860 complaints. Engine and engine cooling is named most on the 1996 (58), 1997 (33) and 1999 (40).
Manual steering shows up again. Recall 97V138 covers 1996-1997 cars, where the pinion bearing cage in the steering gear can separate under heavy load, such as parking lot turns. Dealers replace the gear.
2000-2002: the facelift and a pile of recalls
For 2000, Saturn facelifted the S-Series one last time before ending it in 2002. Complaints fall to 390 for the three years, with the electrical system leading the 2001 and 2002. But the 2000 has seven recall campaigns, more than any other SL year. They cover brake pipe nuts that may not be tight (99V231), seat belt guide anchor bolts (99V280, 1999-2000), a park lock cable on automatics (00V310), a fuel tank vent valve weld (00V309), plus an armrest latch, rear bumper fasteners and instrument panel welds.
Keep fixing it, or sell?
With an SL this age, one comparison settles most cases: the shop estimate against the price a working SL commands. An estimate near that price says sell it unrepaired.
- Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup for anything never done.
- Overheating or a dead engine? See head gasket or overheating and blown engine.
- Brakes soft or seized? Our bad brakes guide covers the call.
- Simply worn out? Old or high-mileage cars explains how age plays into it.
Selling an SL whole
- Dig out the SL's title and note the VIN and odometer.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where the car sits: a back yard, a garage, a gravel drive. Flat tires or seized brakes matter for loading, so mention them. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave the SL whole, wheels and converter still bolted on. Mention anything already removed.
- Hand over the title and keys. Lost the SL's paperwork decades ago? Start with selling with no title.
The SL's successor was the Ion. See also the SC coupe, the SW wagon, or all Saturn models.
Questions people ask
- Which Saturn SL year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 1995, with 355 as of October 10, 2026. Seats lead that year with 63, then engine and engine cooling (57) and hydraulic brakes (46). The 1996 (287) and 1994 (286) come next.
- What was the seat recliner recall on the SL?
- Recall 99V045 covers 1994-1995 cars. Repeated use can wear down the teeth in the front seat recliners until the backrest slips partly rearward. Dealers replace the recliner mechanisms. The campaign counts 138,691 vehicles.
- How are the SL, SC and SW related?
- They're the S-Series. The SL is the sedan, the SW wagon was added for the 1993 model year, and the SC is the coupe. By the second generation all three shared the same wheelbase, Wikipedia says.
- Will you buy a 25- or 30-year-old SL that doesn't run?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Age alone doesn't rule a car out.
