SW complaints and recall campaigns by year
From NHTSA's complaint file, October 10, 2026. NHTSA also holds one complaint filed under a 1992 SW, a year before the wagon's first EPA year; it is shown as filed. The final wagon years have been around for less time to draw owner reports, so read the late-year drop with that in mind.

By generation: what owners wrote about
1993-1995: brakes and seats
Wikipedia lists 1.9-liter four-cylinder engines (the LK0/L24 and the LL0 DOHC) and a choice of five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearboxes, on the same 102.4-inch wheelbase as the SL sedan. These three model years hold 93 complaints. Hydraulic brakes lead: 5, 7 and 7, or 19 of the SW's 27 brake complaints. No brake recall shows up until the 2000 model year.
Seats draw 6 complaints on the 1994 and 5 more on the 1995. Recall 99V045000 deals with 1994-1995 front seat-back recliners: worn gear teeth can allow the seat back to drop partly backward. Vehicle speed control is named 5 times on the 1994.
The early recalls are mostly wiring. Recall 93V132000 covers generator wiring with no protection against excess current, fixed with a harness that opens like a fuse. Recall 93V094000, for 1993, covers a battery cable terminal that can short against the starter solenoid housing. For 1995, recall 94V217000 covers a misadjusted park lock cable.
1996-1999: the redesign
Wikipedia says the second-generation SL and SW, made 1996 to 1999, got a completely redesigned exterior. These years hold 94 complaints. The engine and cooling system leads the 1996 (5) and 1998 (6). The 1997 leans electrical (7) and power train (5). The 1998 has 5 complaints about vehicle speed control and 3 about visibility. One 1999 complaint reports a death.
The only recall in this stretch is 99V280000, which covers 1999-2000 cars for shoulder belt guide anchor bolts that may not be installed or tightened right.
2000-2001: last facelift, most recalls
For 2000, Wikipedia says, the S-Series was facelifted for the final time before it ended in 2002. The 2000 and 2001 wagons have only 21 complaints between them, but the 2000 carries seven recall campaigns: instrument panel welds (99V230000), rear bumper fasteners (99V232000), brake pipe nuts (99V231000), shoulder belt bolts (99V280000), a console armrest latch (99V297000), a weld on the fuel tank vent valve (00V309000) and a check of the automatic's park lock cable (00V310000). The last two also cover 2001.
Each recall's number tallies the full campaign, which can stretch beyond the SW, so none of those totals is wagons alone.
Worth fixing?
Start with the VIN at NHTSA's lookup. Then compare the repair quote to what the wagon would bring running. If they're close, or the quote is higher, sell.
- Engine or overheating: the most named component, with 29 complaints. See head gasket.
- Brakes: hydraulic brakes are second, with 27. See bad or seized brakes.
- Failed inspection: see failed inspection or rust.
- Hasn't moved in years: see sitting for years.
Selling the wagon whole
- Note the VIN, mileage and trim (SW1 or SW2), plus what's wrong and whether it rolls.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe the spot it's parked in, and whether the tires still hold air. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Clear out your belongings, not its parts. Leave the spare, the roof rack and everything bolted on. Tell us about anything already gone.
- Title and photo ID go with the car on pickup day. Missing the title? Read selling with no title. Then check after you sell for plates and insurance.
Thinking of parting it out instead? Part it out or sell it whole compares the two. More from the line: the SL, the SC and every Saturn.
Questions people ask
- Which Saturn SW year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 1995 leads with 36 in the October 10, 2026 count; the 1997 (31) and 1994 (30) trail it. The 1994 has the most complaints reporting a crash, 11.
- Is a recall's vehicle count the number of SWs affected?
- No. The counts cover the whole campaign. Each campaign may include other models, so a figure like 352,833 for recall 93V132000 is not wagons alone.
- Will you buy an SW that has been parked for years?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Mention a dead battery or flat tires up front so the truck can load it.
- Is it better to part out my SW?
- You don't have to. You can sell the whole car as it sits. Part it out or sell it whole compares the two.
