Selling a junk or non-running Saturn SC
The 1994 Saturn SC tops every other year of the coupe for NHTSA complaints: 133, and 51 of them are about the seats. Over the whole 1991-2002 run, seats lead every other component, with 114 of the SC's 709 complaints as of October 10, 2026.

The SC at a glance
Wikipedia lists the SC as a front-wheel-drive coupe on GM's Z platform, built at Spring Hill, Tennessee. The engines Wikipedia names are 1.9-liter fours: LK0/L24 and the twin-cam LL0 (DOHC). The body panels were dent-resistant polymer, which Wikipedia calls Saturn's unique selling proposition. The Saturn Ion followed the S-Series line.
Complaints and recalls by generation
1991-1996: seats, belts and early electrical recalls
Wikipedia dates the first SC coupes from 1990 to 1996, sold at first in a single trim. Those model years hold 419 complaints, well over half the total.
The seat complaints cluster here: 20 on the 1993, 51 on the 1994 and 30 on the 1995. Recall 99V045000, filed in March 1999 for 1994-1995 cars, says front seat-back recliner gear teeth can wear with use and let the seat back slip partly rearward under force. Dealers replace the recliner mechanisms. NHTSA lists 138,691 vehicles in that campaign, which may include other models, so the number is not SC coupes alone.
Seat belts lead the 1991 and the 1992. On the 1992, 16 of 31 complaints name them.
Two recalls touch the charging and starting wiring. Recall 93V132000 covers 1991-1993 cars whose generator wiring had no protection against excess current from a short in the generator; the fix is a harness that opens like a fuse. NHTSA's 352,833 figure is for the full recall, and that recall may reach beyond the SC. The 1993 also has recall 93V094000, for a battery cable terminal at the starter solenoid that can touch the housing and short.
Two more involve the automatic. Recall 92V098000 says some 1992 transaxle valve bodies were machined wrong, so the car might not engage Neutral or Park even with the selector showing it had. Recall 94V217000 says a park lock cable on 1995 cars was adjusted so the shifter could leave Park with the key out.
1997-2000: a longer wheelbase, then a pile of 2000 recalls
Wikipedia says the second-generation SC ran 1997 to 2000 and moved to the longer wheelbase shared with the SL sedan and SW wagon. It also lists a 3-door coupe from 1999 to 2002.
The 1997 draws 94 complaints, led by seat belts (17), the electrical system (16) and the engine and cooling system (12). That year's recall 97V161000 says a front belt retractor may not lock up properly after being pulled out much faster than normal a number of times; dealers replace both front retractors. Recall 96V153000 covers 1997 front passenger seats with less lock pawl engagement than the federal seating standard requires.
On the 1998 the engine and cooling system takes the top spot, with 16 of 52 complaints. The 1999 has 45 complaints, and 13 of them report a crash.
The 2000 is the odd year out: just 15 complaints, but seven recall campaigns, the most of any SC year. Most are about meeting federal standards: brake pipe nuts that may not be tightened right (99V231000), shoulder belt guide anchor bolts (99V280000, which also covers 1999), loose or missing rear bumper fasteners (99V232000), a console armrest latch (99V297000) and instrument panel welds (99V230000). Two more reach into 2001: a park lock cable check on automatics (00V310000) and a fuel tank vent valve weld (00V309000).
2001-2002: the facelift
For 2001, Wikipedia says, the SC1 and SC2 got new front and rear fascias, headlamps and tail lamps. These two years hold 84 complaints. The electrical system leads both: 7 on the 2001 and 12 of 38 on the 2002, which also has 6 about the air bags. The two 2000-2001 campaigns above are the only recalls in our data that reach this generation.
SC complaints and recalls, year by year
The SC figures reflect NHTSA complaints on October 10, 2026. Each is an owner telling their story, not a proven defect. One recall campaign can span several years and often covers other S-Series cars.
| Model year | Complaints | Reported a crash | Injuries | Recall campaigns | Named most |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1991 | 11 | 3 | 4 | 1 | Seat belts (4) |
| 1992 | 31 | 3 | 3 | 2 | Seat belts (16) |
| 1993 | 81 | 15 | 8 | 2 | Seats (20) |
| 1994 | 133 | 18 | 12 | 1 | Seats (51) |
| 1995 | 98 | 20 | 14 | 2 | Seats (30) |
| 1996 | 65 | 10 | 6 | 0 | Electrical; engine and cooling (13 each) |
| 1997 | 94 | 11 | 7 | 3 | Seat belts (17) |
| 1998 | 52 | 6 | 3 | 0 | Engine and cooling (16) |
| 1999 | 45 | 13 | 13 | 1 | Engine and cooling (9) |
| 2000 | 15 | 5 | 3 | 7 | Electrical (3) |
| 2001 | 46 | 7 | 5 | 2 | Electrical; engine and cooling (7 each) |
| 2002 | 38 | 7 | 9 | 0 | Electrical (12) |
Three complaints report a death, one each on the 1992, 1994 and 1997.
Repair the SC, or sell it unfixed?
Every recall here dates from 1992 to 2000, so start with the VIN. NHTSA's lookup shows whether any campaign still reads open on your car. Then weigh the repair quote against what a running SC would fetch. If the quote comes close or goes past it, selling makes more sense.
- Engine trouble? On the SC, engine and cooling come in second with 97 complaints. Blown engine and head gasket explain how to weigh it.
- Automatic won't hold Park or Neutral? Three recalls above deal with the park lock or valve body. Get the fault confirmed before you pay for parts.
- Seat back slipping on a 1994 or 1995? That's the subject of recall 99V045000.
- Several problems at once? See repairs cost more than it is worth.
How to sell an SC whole
- Have the details ready: the VIN, the mileage, SC1 or SC2 if you know it, what's wrong, and whether it rolls.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where it is (driveway, back lot, garage or shop) and note flat tires or missing wheels so the truck can load it. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave the SC in one piece. Mention any part already removed, since it changes the offer.
- At pickup, hand over the SC's title and show the driver a photo ID. Can't find the title? Begin with selling with no title. For plates and insurance afterward, see after you sell.

Questions people ask
- Which Saturn SC model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 1994, with 133 in the October 10, 2026 count. Next are the 1995 (98) and the 1997 (94). These are owner reports, not proven faults, and the most recent SC years have had a briefer span in which owners could report.
- Does the seat-back recall cover my SC?
- Recall 99V045000 covers 1994-1995 cars. It says front seat-back recliner gear teeth can wear and let the seat back slip partly rearward. Type the SC's VIN on nhtsa.gov/recalls and it will show if that recall is still open.
- Will you buy an SC that has not run in years?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Say where your Saturn SC sits and if it rolls, and we'll pick the right truck.
- Should I remove parts from the SC before selling?
- No. You sell the whole car as it sits. If parts are already missing, list them in your offer request.
