Selling a damaged or non-running Volvo C40
All six of the Volvo C40's recall campaigns cover the 2023 model year, and the 2023 also holds 24 of the 40 complaints owners have filed with NHTSA. Those counts run through October 10, 2026, and the C40 is young, so its numbers are still growing.

A C40 that won't charge, won't move or got wrecked is still something you can sell. We buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
The car
The EPA lists the C40 as an electric small SUV for 2022-2026, first as the C40 Recharge and C40 Recharge twin, later as the EC40 and EC40 Twin. Wikipedia dates the coupé SUV's production from September 2021 and names Katharina Sachs as a designer of the C40/EC40. It sits on Compact Modular Architecture, related to the Polestar 2.
Wikipedia lists a 75.0 kWh battery for 2018-22 and an 82.0 kWh battery from 2022. Single-motor electric versions were front-motor, front-wheel drive through 2023 and rear-motor, rear-wheel drive after that.
Known problems by model year
2022: the camera and speed control
Fourteen complaints. Back-over prevention, the rearview camera system, leads with 4, then vehicle speed control at 3 and electrical at 2. One complaint reports a fire. Two recall campaigns reach the 2022, both for the camera: 25V282000 and 25V908000, where the rearview image may not display. C40 owners get the repair as new software, either at a Volvo dealer or sent to the car over the air. Each campaign lists 413,151 vehicles across more than ten Volvo models, so that figure says nothing about how many C40s are affected.
2023: the busiest year
Twenty-four complaints, with 2 crashes, 1 fire and 2 injuries reported. The top items are spread thin: unknown or other, structure and power train at 3 each. On top of the two camera campaigns, four more recalls cover the 2023:
- 23V012000: a Brake Control Module 2 diagnostic error may cause a loss of the antilock brakes. Over-the-air fix. 27,457 vehicles across eight models.
- 23V188000: a false fault code for the emergency call system, fixed with a software update. 393 vehicles across six models.
- 24V938000: clamps on the driver's inner far side air bag may be crimped wrong. This one names only the C40, and only 2 vehicles.
- 25V392000: brake power-assist software. Owners were told not to use One Pedal Drive until the repair. 11,469 vehicles across many Volvo EVs and plug-in hybrids.
2024: two complaints so far
One crash and one injury among them. Three campaigns apply: both camera recalls and the air bag clamp recall.

Fix it or sell it?
- Check your C40's VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup. Several C40 fixes are free software updates.
- Battery or charging trouble? Get the dealer's diagnosis in writing, then read EV battery failed.
- Crash damage? An insurer's numbers often decide it; see wrecked or totaled.
Selling a C40 whole
- Have the VIN, the mileage, the state of charge if you know it, and what's wrong.
- Ask for an offer, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say whether it can be put in Neutral and where it's parked. An EV that won't power up loads differently.
- If you still have the C40's charging cable, leave it in the car. Tell us about anything missing.
- Have the title and ID ready. After you sell covers plates and insurance.
Questions people ask
- Which C40 model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- It's the 2023 C40, holding 24 of 40 on October 10, 2026. The 2022 shows 14, and the 2024 shows 2. The C40 is young, so its counts are still low and growing.
- Is there a recall for the C40's rearview camera?
- Two. Campaigns 25V282000 and 25V908000 cover 2022-2025 cars whose rearview camera image may not display. The fix is a free software update from a dealer or over the air.
- Should I avoid One Pedal Drive on my C40?
- On a 2023 C40, check recall 25V392000 by VIN. It advises owners not to use One Pedal Drive until a dealer has done the brake power-assist software repair.
- Will you buy a C40 that won't charge or drive?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, EVs included, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
