Selling a damaged or dead Volvo EX40
Three complaints and three recalls. That is the entire NHTSA record for the Volvo EX40 in our October 10, 2026 count, and the brakes appear on both lists: two of the three complaints name the service brakes, and one recall tells owners to stop using One Pedal Drive until a fix is done.

The EX40 in a few lines
EPA's data has the EX40 in two model years, 2025 and 2026, filed as a small sport utility vehicle, electric only, under two names: EX40 and EX40 Twin. Wikipedia's EX40 article describes a line in production since November 2017 on Volvo's Compact Modular Architecture, assembled in Ghent (Belgium), Luqiao (China), Shah Alam (Malaysia) and Hoskote (India). The electric version switched from a front motor driving the front wheels (2018-23) to a rear motor driving the rear wheels (2023 on), with an 82.0 kWh NMC battery since 2022. Its related cars are the Polestar 2 and the Lynk & Co 01.
Complaints and recalls, 2025-2026
Wikipedia lists the electric EX40 with a rear motor driving the rear wheels from 2023 on. Both EPA years fall in that span, so they are treated together here.
Brakes. One complaint on the 2025 and one on the 2026 name the service brakes. Recall 25V392000, reported June 12, 2025, covers 2025-2026 EX40s and lists the brake power assist control module software. Volvo's advice is to leave One Pedal Drive off until the fix is in. The campaign counts 11,469 vehicles, but that figure also covers the C40, EC40, XC40 BEV and several plug-in hybrid Volvos, so it is not an EX40 number.
Power train. One 2025 complaint names it. No recall on file covers that component.
Rear camera. Two recalls, 25V282000 (May 8, 2025) and 25V908000 (December 23, 2025), cover 2025 EX40s whose rearview camera image may not display. Both are fixed free with a software update, which a dealer can install or the car can receive over the air. The campaigns count 413,151 vehicles apiece, spread across the XC40, XC60, XC90, S60, S90, V60, V90 and more.

| 2026 | 1 | 0 | 1 | Service brakes 1 |

Repair it or sell it?
- Start with the VIN. Enter it in NHTSA's recall search. The two camera fixes are free, and the brake recall is worth asking a Volvo dealer about before you judge the car.
- Battery or charging trouble? Get a written diagnosis. Our EV battery guide covers how to weigh it.
- Crash damage? Compare the body shop's estimate with what a running EX40 of similar mileage sells for. See wrecked or totaled.
- Still making payments? Selling with a loan owed explains how the lender gets paid off at the sale.

Questions people ask
- How many NHTSA complaints does the Volvo EX40 have?
- Three in our October 10, 2026 count: the 2025 has two and the 2026 has one. Two name the service brakes and one names the power train. None reports a crash, fire or injury. With cars this new, owners have had little time to report anything.
- What is the EX40 One Pedal Drive recall?
- Recall 25V392000, reported June 12, 2025, covers 2025-2026 EX40s under service brakes, power assist and control module software. The recall tells owners to keep One Pedal Drive switched off until the repair. That 11,469 count also covers other Volvos, not just the EX40.
- Will you buy an EX40 that was in a crash or won't charge?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, electric ones included, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us what is damaged, whether the EX40 drives, and its street address.
