Selling a wrecked or broken Volvo XC40
The rearview camera tops the XC40's complaint list. Owners have filed 35 complaints with NHTSA under back over prevention, more than any other component, and Volvo has recalled 2021-2025 XC40s for camera software twice in one year: 25V282 in May 2025 and 25V908 in December 2025.

The XC40 is still on sale, so most that end up for sale as junk have been wrecked or have a problem the owner would rather not fix. Either way, you can sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
One generation, gas and electric
Wikipedia dates XC40 production from November 2017, on Volvo's Compact Modular Architecture, the same family as the Polestar 2. The EPA lists it for 2019-2026 as hybrid and electric (Recharge) versions, from the T4 and T5 to the B4, B5 and Recharge Twin.
- Gas engines: a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo or a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo, front- or all-wheel drive, with an 8-speed automatic among the gearboxes.
- Electric: front-motor, front-wheel drive from 2018 to 2023, then rear-motor, rear-wheel drive from 2023. The battery was 75.0 kWh through 2022 and 82.0 kWh after.
What the complaints and recalls show
Owners sent these XC40 reports to NHTSA through October 10, 2026, and one report alone does not prove a defect. The most recent XC40s haven't been driven as long as the early ones. Many of these recalls span several Volvo models, so their vehicle counts are not the XC40's alone.
2019-2020: early build issues
These years hold 42 complaints. The 2019 had four recalls, and two were about how a few cars were put together: rear seat backs missing their lock strikers (18V535, 27 vehicles) and brake pedals that may not have been riveted right (18V554, 71 vehicles). The brake pedal recall carried a do-not-drive warning, and Volvo inspected cars on site or towed them in. 20V144 (2019-2020) updated automatic emergency braking software after a software and hardware mismatch; that campaign lists 121,605 vehicles across nine Volvo models.
2021-2023: the busiest stretch
These three years hold 137 of the 219 complaints. The 2021 tops the list with 52, led by electrical (11) and fuel and propulsion (6). The 2022 is where back over prevention first leads (13). The 2023 has 48, with 8 crash reports, the most of any year.
The electric Recharge drew its own recalls here:
- 21V109 (2021-2022): the battery energy control module could reset and cut the high-voltage system. 2,278 vehicles, all XC40 Recharge.
- 22V288 (2021-2022): water could get into the harness and corrode the accelerator pedal sensor circuit. 5,351 vehicles.
- 21V881 (2021): a loose or missing bolt on the electric motor's cross-member bracket. 4 vehicles.
Other recalls on these years: seat belt retractors that could stop locking early (21V682, 19,149 vehicles), a brake control module diagnostic error that could switch off ABS (23V012, an over-the-air fix, 27,457 vehicles), and a false emergency-call warning (23V188, 393 vehicles).
2024-2026: newest, least time
These years hold 40 complaints. 24V010 fixed software that could stop the left rear turn signal; its 17,409 vehicles are all 2024 XC40s. 25V392 applies to 2023-2024 electric XC40s and some other Volvos, and asks owners to skip One Pedal Drive until the repair is done.
Fix it or sell it?
Most XC40 recall fixes are free software updates, so enter your VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup first. A camera that goes blank or an ABS warning may be a recall item, not a repair bill.
After a crash, the math is different. Weigh the body shop estimate against the XC40's value once fixed. If the insurer already wrote it off, read insurer totaled it and wrecked or totaled. For a Recharge with a high-voltage battery warning, read EV battery failed before you approve any work.
Complaints and recalls by model year
XC40 counts come from NHTSA's data on October 10, 2026. Yearly recall figures overlap because one campaign can cover several years.
| Model year | Complaints | Crashes | Injured | Recalls | Top component |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2019 | 30 | 4 | 3 | 4 | Service brakes (5) |
| 2020 | 12 | 1 | 2 | 1 | Electrical (4) |
| 2021 | 52 | 3 | 2 | 6 | Electrical (11) |
| 2022 | 37 | 2 | 2 | 4 | Back over prevention (13) |
| 2023 | 48 | 8 | 5 | 5 | Electrical, back over prevention (9 each) |
| 2024 | 28 | 5 | 3 | 4 | Service brakes (6) |
| 2025 | 11 | 1 | 0 | 2 | Unknown or other, back over prevention (3 each) |
| 2026 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 0 | Speed control (1) |
| Total | 219 | 25 | 17 | 14 campaigns | Back over prevention (35) |
Over every year, the most-named components are back over prevention (35), electrical (34), unknown or other (29), service brakes (19), forward collision avoidance (17) and visibility and wipers (7). The file has no fire complaints on the XC40.
Selling an XC40 whole
- Have the details ready: year, gas or Recharge, VIN, mileage, and what happened.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us about the spot. A dead XC40 Recharge won't go into neutral the normal way, so say where it's parked and whether it rolls.
- Leave it complete. Don't pull the wheels, the battery or the catalytic converter on a gas car. Mention anything missing.
- Paperwork: the title and photo ID. If a loan is still open, see still owe on the loan. Before pickup, wipe your data from the infotainment and the app.
Questions people ask
- Is my XC40 in the rearview camera recalls?
- If it is a 2021-2025, it is listed under both 25V282 and 25V908. NHTSA's notices say the rearview camera image may not display. A dealer or an over-the-air push installs the XC40 software fix at no cost. Run your VIN through nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- What does recall 25V392 tell XC40 Recharge owners to do?
- It lists 2023-2024 XC40 BEVs among the cars covered. Until the repair is done, owners are advised not to use One Pedal Drive. The campaign lists 11,469 vehicles across several Volvo models.
- Why do the 2025 and 2026 XC40 have so few complaints?
- Mostly time. On October 10, 2026, the 2025 XC40 showed 11 and the 2026 showed 1, since they're the newest ones out there. A low count on a new model year is not a clean bill of health.
- Will you buy a wrecked XC40 Recharge?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, gas and electric, and you sell the whole car as it sits. Pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us if the car shows any high-voltage battery warning.
