Sell your dead Jaguar X-Type as it sits
Of the 315 X-Type complaints owners sent NHTSA, 116 are about the 2002 Jaguar X-Type, the most of any model year. Forty-two of those name the power train. That's 42 of the 70 power-train complaints across every X-Type year combined.

What's under an X-Type
Wikipedia lists the X-Type as built from 2001 to 2009 at Halewood in England, on Ford's CD132 platform and related to the second-generation Ford Mondeo. It came with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Every engine was a V6: 2.1, 2.5 or 3.0 liters. Gearboxes were a 5-speed or 6-speed manual, a 5-speed Jatco automatic or a 6-speed Aisin automatic. The EPA lists it under two names, X-Type and X-Type Sport Brake, and the XE took the X-Type's place.
Complaints and recalls by model year
Here are the X-Type owner complaints NHTSA had on record when we checked on October 10, 2026. An X-Type complaint is one owner speaking, not a fault anyone confirmed, and adding them up does not grade the car. The last X-Type model years saw fewer years of driving, so their owners had less time to report. A 2001 model year holds one complaint and one recall, and no 2008 row exists.
| Model year | Complaints | Crashes reported | Component named most | Recall campaigns |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2001 | 1 | 0 | Steering (1) | 1 |
| 2002 | 116 | 13 | Power train (42) | 2 |
| 2003 | 72 | 12 | Power train (11) | 2 |
| 2004 | 67 | 9 | Power train (9) | 1 |
| 2005 | 25 | 2 | Exterior lighting (5) | 0 |
| 2006 | 21 | 5 | Vehicle speed control (7) | 0 |
| 2007 | 13 | 2 | Power train (3) | 0 |
Over all years, X-Type complaints report 43 crashes, 5 fires and 26 people hurt. Those on the 2003 also report one death.
Known problems, grouped by years
We have no generation dates for the X-Type, so its years are grouped by what the complaint data shows.
2002-2004: the early cars
These three X-Type years hold 255 of the 315 complaints. Power train leads in all three. Tires make the top three every year from 2002 to 2006 and reach 34 complaints over the car's life. On the 2003, air bags rank third with 8.
All three X-Type recalls land in these years. NHTSA's vehicle counts cover each whole campaign, and a campaign can take in other models besides the X-Type.
- Turn signals, 2002-2003. Under 03V011000, the circuit powering the direction indicators could fail without the driver knowing the outside lamps had gone dark. Dealers swap the general electric module. NHTSA counts 49,174 vehicles.
- Hand brake, 2001-2003 manuals. Under 04V487000, on left-hand-drive X-Types with a manual gearbox, the hand brake may squeeze the pads too lightly to stop the car rolling away. Dealers fit a manually adjusted lever in place of the self-adjusting one. NHTSA counts 3,856 vehicles.
- Fuel cap, 2004. Under 04V460000, cranking the filler cap too tight can spoil its seal, and fuel could get out if the X-Type rolled over. Dealers fit better seals. NHTSA counts 1,147 vehicles.
2005-2008: fewer complaints
From the 2005 X-Type on, complaints fall to 59 across three model years. The leading component shifts every year: exterior lighting on the 2005, speed control on the 2006, the power train again on the 2007. No recall campaign names any of these years.
Is it worth fixing?
On an X-Type this old, the decision usually comes down to one repair quote.
- Run the X-Type's VIN through NHTSA's recall search, and ask a Jaguar dealer about anything still open on a 2001-2004.
- Gearbox or drive trouble? Power train is the component X-Type owners named most in their NHTSA complaints, 70 across all years. Our bad transmission guide covers the warning signs.
- Clutch worn out on a stick-shift X-Type? See worn-out clutch.
- Set the quote beside the car's worth. If a running X-Type of your year and miles sells for about what the job costs, read when a fix costs more than the X-Type is worth and old or high-mileage cars.
Selling an X-Type whole
- Note the X-Type's specifics: VIN, odometer, the fault, and front-wheel or all-wheel drive. Mention it if yours is badged Sport Brake.
- Get a number online or by calling (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where the X-Type sits and if it rolls in Neutral. On a slope, deep in a narrow garage or behind a gate, flag it ahead of time. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave the X-Type intact, wheels and converter included. Name anything already pulled.
- Truck day: the X-Type's title, a driver's license or other ID, and its key. Plate rules vary state to state; see after you sell.

Questions people ask
- Which X-Type year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2002, which NHTSA's records put at 116 on October 10, 2026. The 2003 comes next at 72, then the 2004 at 67. From the 2005 on, no X-Type year passes 25.
- My manual X-Type creeps with the hand brake on. Is that a recall?
- Campaign 04V487000 covers 2001-2003 X-Types with a stick shift. Their hand brake may not clamp the pads hard enough to hold the car, and dealers swap the self-adjusting lever for a manually adjusted one. NHTSA's VIN search confirms whether your X-Type is on it.
- Will you buy an X-Type whose automatic quit?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and an X-Type with a dead gearbox gets free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us whether it will roll in Neutral.
- Should I sell parts off the X-Type first?
- No need. Sell the whole car as it sits. If parts are already gone from the X-Type, list them, because they lower the number.
